On April 8th, 2005...Dr. James Pope, Principal of Moorhead City Middle School died in a car crash. This was his first, and last, year at Moorhead...but that is not what upsets me. What upsets me is that he was the principal at Hammond Middle School from 2001 to 2004. I had the priveledge of being a student at Hammond from 2001 to 2002, and from that one year that I attended under his authority, I can easily say he was a great man. He was very relaxed and knew how to talk to the students eye-to-eye. Our test scores were up because of him...and nobody in the school ever complained.
I must confess that I never went to the guidance office when I needed help... I went to him. He always knew what to say and how to say it...and I was never there to pay him back. I...couldn't even go to his funeral, as I just now found out.
If I seem really upset for the next few weeks, you guys should understand why.

I just got an email from the replacement principal at Moorhead Middle School.
Dr. Pope was killed in a car accident. He was on his way to school (Highway 24) with his 2 daughters. The weather was extremely bad that morning. A truck was going too fast for conditions and hydroplaned. It hit Dr. Pope's Expedition broad side on the passenger side. Then a second smaller truck was knocked into the rear of his vehicle.
From our understanding he died on the scene. He was identified by two of our county SROs including the one here. His daughters were taken to Carteret General Hospital and then taken by ambulance to Pitt County Hospital. They were hospitalized for a week with some seatbelt injuries and Ginna had a broken arm. The arm was crushed when the driver's seat broke and came back on her. Her sister helped her get out of the car before the emergency services arrived. They are back in school now.
His wife was brought from her job in New Bern to Morehead City after the wreck. She is doing as well as can be expected.

Woah. Sounds like a bad accident. Now I really do wish the best, for both you, and Dr. Pope's family.
