Title: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups
Post by: Xorlak on January 17, 2007, 10:03:36 AM
Welcome to Dark Age Legends, chapter 12 sign ups! Chapter 12 will pick up where chapter 11 left off, but due to the break in the action, this is an excellent point to jump in if you haven?t already. If you haven?t been following the story the entire way through, don?t worry. You are not expected to read the entire RP-- just the summary and rules below. However, if you never played in a forum RP before (particularly this one) you may want to read a random page or two in the middle to get a sense of how everything works.

Chapter 11+ Story Arc Prelude

Gaian has been plunged into darkness.  The evil Dark Emperor Retan has returned with a horde of minions from other worlds, sealing up the heroes of Gaian as punishment for his past exodus.  Forming an unholy alliance with the Kandarinian Sovereignty, the two unchecked nations have run rampant, unleashing their fury upon the globe for the past 18 months.  The world is dying.  The darkness that was once confined to the Dark Continent is spreading.  Vicious creatures now run rampant across the land, sky, and sea.  All know and fear the Dark Empire?

Those that remain free from the tyrannical rule are few and far between.  Small pockets of resistance.  Small bands of freedom fighters that struggle to remain hidden, let alone survive?

DALpedia

DALpedia (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia) is the primary source of all DAL related information, including archives (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia/index.php/Archives).

Rules

Dark Age Legends Rules (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia/index.php/Rules)

All players must read the rules.  Continuing Chapter 11 players can just give them a brief skim, as the rules are unchanged.

As per usual, update/create your character?s bio page in DALpedia, then post a link to it here.  New players post here first, so we can approve your characters.

Planned Event!!

Sometime near the beginning/middle of this chapter, the Dark Empire is going to launch a full scale assault on Tjed.  Although not required, to maximize the fun-ness, I recommend everyone to move at least one character over there!

Currenly Tjed has only been harassed by the Dark Empire.  Lizard Men already run rampant on the island, and the only safe places left are the capital city of Tjedon, located in the center of the island and surrounded on all sides by very steep mountains (this is the same place the Mavas battle took place in several chapters ago), and the network of tunnels born deep into the mountains (which may or may not contain a super secret base of operations!).

Most of the citizens have retreated to one of these safe locations.  Although the lizards are strong, there is currently too few to properly take the island.  (This will change when the real assault begins, obviously.)  As Ven mentioned, the Tjedians have had at least one encounter with the Velkens (ending in disaster, of course), and are therefore deathly afraid of them.

More info on Tjed here (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia/index.php/Tjed).

Chapter 12 begins in a week or so!

Just a shadow? Why are his pants brighter than his armor, then? And I can actualy see the trim on the armor...
And his pose...He kinda looks like he is jogging or something. Hey, DudeMan, download the pic and sharpen it, brighten it...something! You are missing the glory of Retan here!

Coming of Darkness?
Rebirth of Chaos?
Day of Calamity?
...
The rest coming to mind is nought but non-english words

It depresses me, how despite the fact his name is everywhere on every page, people still insist on spelling his name wrong.

But yes, some fool just had brightness setting on my monitor really low. But yes, now I see it looks much better.

EDIT: Damn, I must have had the low brightness for awhile. I'm noticing everything much brighter. It makes me feel so much more positive! Laughing

Your characters don't have to jump in and immediately interact with others.  They can be off doing their own thing for a while and then interact later, when it's convenient for you and/or you feel you understand what's going on.  In fact, lately it seems everything's bunch of independent stories.  (Heh...)

So far, it's been me and DM since like the last half of chapter 11, plus Spartan's occasional book-chapter post.  (Heh...)  That's it.

"Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria". Reason enough?

Plus the fact that I wrote like a 2 page long post and my compy froze when I was about to submit it and thus I lost all data really pissed me off.

Expect me to post everyday since tommorow. Or today, if nothing happens.

Hey Xorlak, is Jayce and his flying, or not flying, ship going to be on or over or near land anytime soon. That rock attack was a way to introduce a new ability for Druid. Just let me know if i need to modify it, thanks.
Title: (no subject)
Post by: Xorlak on February 08, 2007, 07:43:56 PM
Jayce is on the Jagahn, a really evil looking sea faring ship, leading two more smaller (but still quite large) sea faring warships.  (Druid could be on any one, though I would imagine he would have followed Jayce.)  I was going to coordinate them landing on Tjed at "sunrise", which isn't really a fixed time away but won't be too much longer (I'm sort of letting other players get a chance to get a character over there if they want, plus Spartan has his thread going which sort of depends on it being night for the moment).

Since these are big warships, they can't really get close to land (due to the water being too shallow) so they land troops via small boats.

So to answer your question, yes, they'll probably arrive at Tjed soon, but no, the ships won't really be close enough to land for Druid to simply jump off like he did in your post.

Just let me know if something isn't clear and I'll try to explain it better.  The whole method of the Dark Empire landing troops via small boats was sort of touched on way back in Chapter 3, like two years ago, so sometimes I forget not everyone has been around that long.  (Heh...)
Title: (no subject)
Post by: Dark Spartan on February 09, 2007, 07:12:08 AM
Aww, isn't that considerate? Razz

That's why I introduced Alex's Twili Transformation ability. Now he's not constrained to the night anymore, so it being nighttime now is solely for atmosphere.

Post by: Dude Man on February 09, 2007, 05:35:21 PM
Hey earlier I think you said that some of Tjed is under control of the Dark Empire, does that include Kesnar? Because I'd imagine that Duilin would have to dock his ship there since that's the only port town.
Title: (no subject)
Post by: Xorlak on February 09, 2007, 05:48:12 PM
The Dark Empire has Lizard Men scattered throughout the place, however there's not enough of them to properly control any town.  There're basically camps scattered around that terrorize the villages, and the only 100% safe place is inland in the capital city and the tunnels built into the surrounding mountains.  The only port town, Kesnar, is going to be really stressed by the lizard men, but essentially under the protection and control of the Tjedian military.
Title: (no subject)
Post by: Coriko on February 09, 2007, 07:06:07 PM
Ok, so then I need a new way to introduce this power. Basically it is summoning like three elite shadow warriors. It is a powerful ability, but very draining so it's not a cheap power don't worry. Just maybe when we land the group can be attacked so I can introduce the power. Is that okay with you.

You know, no matter how hard I try, I simply can't let go of DAL.

Before I can return to it full-time, there can be no mention of full-time posting, so I think I will come back once a week at the weekend (which is the only time I made myself promise to myself that I will get on the computer) and use an NPC character to do some random, non-story-heavy stuff. Is everyone OK with that?

I'm going to try that today and tomorrow.

We now have a timeline (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia/index.php/Timeline)!

There's a lot more to add, so feel free to add stuff.  Only add *major* events, though.  We don't want this to get too cluttered.

I've decided to use a system similar to our own A.D./B.C. with months the same as ours, to minimize confusion.  The current date in the RP is December 2nd, 563 G.E.  Most of my date choices have been arbitrary, the only meaningful one being March 21st, 557 G. E. as the start of Chapter 1, since the RP itself started on March 21st, 2004.  All the events have been scaled from this starting date, since we've been doing a pretty good job of keeping track of how long it's been since certain things happened.

G.E. stands for "Gaian Era".  There have been other eras as well.  This is the most popular dating system currently used on Gaian, though others exist.  (See Kronos' logs.)  Events occurring before year 1 G.E. are simply labeled in reverse as B.G.E. (Before Gaian Era).  E.g. The year 100 B.G.E. is 663 years before the current RP date.  As with our system, there is no year "0".

There have been mentions of events happening millions of years ago in the RP world.  This is a stretch and I'm not sure these are reasonable.  I may bump them up to only a few thousand years ago.  We'll see.  For now, ignore them.

Okay, so here is what is going on right now. Over on the island of Tjed (the good guys) we have an army of lizard men with the Dark Empire (the bad guys) and they're fightin' it up. Meanwile we have random things going about, like Nick (Burton) is fighting random people and Alex (Dark Spartan) is fighting a war in Asgarnia.

If you want to get into some action perhaps you could have your character be at Tjed, Asgarnia or maybe Lawessov.

Darkagegames.net (http://http://darkagegames.net) now features the latest DAL post on the front page!

Thought I'd try this out and see how it goes, though I may move the box around a bit.  DAL is nearing its third anniversary, and frankly I've probably spent as much time writing these posts as I did working on either of my games.  (Heh...) Time for some recognition!

Awesome! Hey that reminds me. I may have suggested this before but maybe Darkagegames.net or the DALPedia could have a quote of the month/week/day? Like there are some lines that just need to be shown off...

Quote from: "Draven"
"You need more credibility than just being old and calling yourself 'a prophet'."

"Your jest is very amusing, but clearly you wouldn't want to take this little joke of yours too far, for it would be very damaging for me to mistake your jest for truth and, say, disembowel your innards and mount your head among the other... examples..."

Quote from: "Abodahon"
"I really don't see why you continue to trust people; you obviously don't have the correct people skills. Oh, it just upsets me to think how heart breaking your love life must be."

"I understand completely what you are: a mental case, but soon you will be a corpse!"

Heh, that's a good idea.  Problem is, there're no automated systems out there for stuff that appears on MediaWiki front pages (checked a while back).  So it'd have to be manually updated every day/week/month.

Is this something you'd like to be in charge of?  If so, I can set it up on the front page with the first quote, and you can change it every time it needs to be changed with something of your choice (or other people can help you out).  I think every day is a bit too much, so weekly or monthly might be a better idea.

For the Dark Age website, I did have the idea of displaying random quotes from the games a while back, but apparently forgot about it.  Thanks for reminding me!  (Heh...)
Title: Re: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups

Yeah, I guess I could be in charge of that. But other people should of course be allowed to have quote up there so maybe we could have a Quote of the Week page, were you can put up a quote you want to be on the front page. It'll be a first come first serve thing I guess. I guess anybody could update, but I have a feeling I'd be the only one bothering too.

EDIT: Oh, by the way check this (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia/index.php/Image:DuilinVsValos.jpg) out. I also have this posted on Duilin's page on DALPedia.

P.S. Cool drawing there... But isn't the empty space on the right extra?

Check out my new siggy and avatar. Bet you'll never find out where I got these pretties.

Yes!!

I feel inspired to draw battle scenes now.  (Heh...)

I will have the quote thing up this weekend or so.

Glad you like it Xor-Guy. Oh and I thought he (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia/index.php/Duilin_%28Demon_Lord%29) could use his own page.
Title: Re: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups

Hmm, not really sure if he needs a totally separate page for that form, but there is a lot of info, so it's probably okay.

Featured quote is up!

There is also a link to a sort of quote archive page.  Please add suggestions for the featured quote to this page.  Then when it's time to update,  pick one from the suggested list, delete it from there and move it to the top, add the date for which it became the feature, and then replace the quote on the front page with it.

Enjoy!

Hurrah! March break. I'll be using my new npc, de Sade, for its duration. Also, cookies to the one who knows who de Sade was (unless your name is "Dark Spartan" or "Dude Man").

EDIT: Hee hee. Looks like someone's having fun with the new quote feature. I stopped by to submit a quote suggestion for Steorra, and while I was editing it, three new suggestions appeared.

An assassin, eh...

Normally overused, but, I must say, slightly underused in DAL. Now just wait till Xorlak approves your dude, and you're good to go. Let me be the first to welcome you Smile

In other news...

Has anyone checked the top 10 longest posts page? I still own #1, haha, but the thrice-cursed noobe Dark Spartan has 8 other spots... Haraldur's probably having nightmares, his huge post is now a mere #8 on the list. The rest are Dark Spartan's.

I'm kind of getting annoyed with the amounts of book posts. It seems like everyone is trying to out do everyone else. But hey, it's not my place to say how long posts should be...

And I'm NOT just jealous because all of my posts have been bumped off.

Actualy, I'll have to agree with DM on this. This is turning into some sort of competition! It's not like me or DM or anyone else whos got enough stubborness can't write a long-arse story about some people which is 20 pages long and then post it. Better yet, make it 100 if one is desperate.
Title: Re: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups

Competition? What?

Maybe the ideas are too long for a short post. The reason I have the top post is because I wrote a moderately-sized post for each of my active characters in one go, and DS likes to put in a lot of dialogue into his posts. I love reading them, and if you guys don't, then good for you - but don't start to get weird ideas about some "competition": exactly who is competing?

Umm... I hope it's not to much of a biggie...
Anyways, I hope chapter twelve posts smoothly.

Welcome, Drannic!

Doriana gets a thumbs up!

One minor point for Justin.  You mention he's a Velken (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia/index.php/Velken).  (Actually you spelled it "Velkin".  Did you mean something else?  Heh...)  Velkens are foxes, not felines.  They're not native to Gaian, the only squad present being called there by Retan.  They're also pretty small.  This is my fault, as I should make all of this more clear in their article since new players aren't expected to read the past several chapters.  (Heh...)

The easiest way to fix this would be to simply make up a new race.  If you really want a Velken character though, talk to me and I'll give you some pointers.

Also since he's not human, a little more description would be nice to help us visualize him.  Other than that, looks good!

----

On the subject of long-ish posts, as a reader, I personally prefer three shorter posts once per day than one longer post once every three days.  But really, it doesn't matter.  During its first year and even beyond, DAL was plagued with really short posts and any plots were extremely shallow.  Now there are multiple rich and vibrant threads going on, and the quality of writing and story telling has improved dramatically.

(Will likely postpone DAL post until tomorrow... Heh...)

Thanks, Xorlak!

I changed Justin to a Gepardi with the ability to transform into an angel or demon (read bio for details).
Anyways, I hope you guys like my ideas I have for this chapter, with the Holy Drannic Republic of Knights. It will be a sensational twist to the story... Hopefully... Meh...

Getting a bit off-topic (but not to far), I kinda thought of a Velken as some sort of anthro being... my mistake.
Well, see you in a few!

~Dori & Justin~

P.S. If this were published, god only knows how many people would read it... (my guess: 5,000,000) Great writting!
Title: Re: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups
Post by: Dude Man on March 14, 2007, 10:38:59 PM
It's actually just Gepardi, no S. Perhaps you could make a page for the Holy Drannic Republic of Knights, unless you want them to be all uber-secret.

Oh and not to sound rude, but can you please try and keep the list pages in alphabetical order. I pop a vein whenever I see somebody add a new page to the list not in alphabetical order.

(Note: If there are any typing errors in my posts, it would be because I'm in a hurry, and I don't wanna go back to fix anything either, because I'm lazy Smile Thanks anyways.)

Three things to Dudeman.

One: I'll go fix the whole Gepardi thingy by just takin' out the S. Thank you for notifing me.

Two: I also like the Uber-secret idea, so I'll stick with that... and I'm also feeling a little lazy... heh... who knows. If I ever have enough time on this computer, I'll think about it.

Three: I'm very organized. I don't believe I've put anything out of order or anything like that, unless you or somebody else fixed it for me. In any case, thanks if you did. I'd probably slap myself if I screwd anything like that up.

I'll see you on Dark Age Legends. (and if you feel like coming to a battle of epic proportions, go north to the dark camp, which is south of the market that's east of the northern fringe docks. 'That's a mouth-full'.)

Message to Dudeman or Xorlak.

To the moderators. Here are a few questions I would like to ask, and I'm betting other people may just as well ask them, or they may have already been asked. I appologize if they have already been asked, but I think it would make others who'd like to sign up feel more informed.

Q 1: How many characters are you alowd to have?

Q 2: Are there any censors? (language, drugs, use of alcohol, violence, that kinda thing. I doubt violence is one of them anyways, but what the heck. Smile )

Q 3: What are you guys 'as readers' looking for 'postwise'? Around a few paragraphs, or a whole five pages, or what? (As I said, new people will feel better informed.)

Well, that about covers it. I hate to bother you so much, but it's for the good of the role players.

Thanks,
~Dori & Justin~

P.S. I have made another new char to tie in with the story. He's a Lizard-man with destructive magic, but a strangely large brain (Heh... oh man, that's just too good to be true, ain't it?)

Title: Re: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups
Post by: Dude Man on March 16, 2007, 05:12:15 PM
1: No limit, yet. Just as long as you don't have like ten people who travel together and all of them have extreme powers.

2: Not really, as long as the language doesn't conflict with the main forum rules, like explicit sexual descriptions, real instructions in making illegal drugs and/or weapons of mass destruction (Heheh).

3: Me personally, maybe a post with around a couple of medium sized paragraphs. Just take a look at the ten longest posts page in achieves, try to avoid making them that long, in my own opinion their posts are generally too long and I find them exhausting too read. (Sorry DS Sad )
Title: Re: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups
Post by: Xorlak on March 17, 2007, 09:39:30 AM
A note on the language thing.  Since posts are now fed to my site's front page, I'd prefer if language is kept to tone-downed levels.  "Blast" can be an awesome swear word, if used creatively. (Heh...)

Drannic, you're doing an awesome job so far.  Just a couple of notes you may be interested in:

Chapters are usually one day long, sometimes prefixed or followed by a night.  I generally keep time in my posts and mention things like sunrise and sunset.   You having posts where days pass is perfectly acceptable, but it means that you're also on a different time schedule than everyone else (e.g. Maybe the events in your posts happened a few days before or something.)  This is no big deal when your characters aren't interacting with anyone else's, but just something you'll want to be aware of when/if you do some character interaction with other posters.

Also, the Dark Continent isn't so far away that days are different.  (Maybe a timezone or two away.)  And since Tjed is east of the Dark Continent (see map (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia/index.php/Tjed)), the sun rises there first.  (Heh...)

The Crimson Empire doesn't really exist any more (just making sure you know this since you're hinting with the word 'crimson' a lot.  Heh...).  Everything that was Crimson was re-assimilated into the Dark Empire when Retan returned (which wasn't a big deal, because the Crimson Empire was the Dark Empire to begin with).  The Crimson Emperor Draven is still around through, and still calls himself that to spite Retan.  The only other person who might consider himself a member of the Crimson Empire might be the alchemist Allen, who is currenly helping out Tjed.

Here's a brief timeline (http://http://www.darkagegames.net/dalpedia/index.php/Timeline) you may want to take a look at.
Title: Re: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups
Post by: Drannic_Lord01 on March 17, 2007, 03:40:40 PM
Hmm... Well that changes everything.

I might want to add a post later saying that all of my past posts were a prologue of some sort.

Anyways, I had also no idea that Tjed and the Dark Continent weren't far enough to have completely different times... one suggestion to you. You may want to put up a sort of time zone map. Who knows? Maybe I'm not the only one dumb enough to make such a stipid mistake (lol)

Still along the lines of my stories, how do you think I could make a sort of post that would make the readers realize that I intended to just have them as a prologue? (That's another mouthful.)

I have another idea as well. After reading another topic (Topic: Wow...), I'm curious to say... would you be interested in publishing this RP or making a game out of it? It would be interesting to program, though.

So then, moving along the lines, I would like to thank everyone for keeping this RP current. It's a great way to spend free time, and I'm not just sucking up to anyone here when I say this!

Keep it real,
~Dori, Jacobie, & Justin~

P.S. I shoul really pick a name and stick with it... sorry bout that. lol.
Title: Re: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups
Post by: Xorlak on March 17, 2007, 08:02:30 PM
Time zones have never been an issue really.  I think you're the first to point out the sun sets at different times in the RP, which of course reflects the real world and makes sense.  Don't really think it's that much of an issue, though.

I think your prologue statement worked well.  (Heh...)  Also we'll be ending the chapter on Wednesday, so when Chapter 13 starts up it'll be a good time to really kick things off.

I personally have no interest in making a game out of this.  Publishing is an interesting thought.  It's easy to publish stuff nowadays (lulu.com), of course, I'm sure no one would buy it but us.  (Heh...)  This is really a just-for-fun thing.

If I signed with all my characters, I'd get tired typing.  (Though I think Dude Man has us all beat.  Heh...)
Title: Re: Dark Age Legends, Chapter 12 -- Sign Ups
Post by: Drannic_Lord01 on March 17, 2007, 10:44:12 PM
Point made, Xorlak. I've pretty much solved the time zone thingy on my own, though, by ending the prologue. Pretty nifty, that...

Anyways, if people knew about this, they'd buy for sure! It'd be like the new harry potter... except with mre violent use of magic... and more blood... and more races... and pretty much anybody can do magic... ahh whatever. It'd probably be too long to rewrite anyways.

See ya on D.A.L. Guys!

Yet I did like how I was able to do a lot with Duilin that chapter but I was rather disappointment with the lack of cooperation with Coriko. I barely made five posts with Marshall. I think next chapter I'm going to have Marshall and Wilham just go on their own and fight against Count Vandrin. I'm sick and tired of telling Coriko to post.

Oh yeah, and I should also have Ophelia come back. I almost forgot about her.

How "short" is this "short break"?
My passover break starts, ugh, today, and will last three weeks, during which I can put serious effort into posting. And the chapters ends now!
I do hope the chapter starts no more than a week after signups are up...
