(Note: I just did this today because dark age legends will be closed for a while. Might as well type somethin'!)
Can you believe it's already been three years since chapter one!? Congratulations to the greatest Role Play ever known to man, DARK AGE LEGENDS!!! In other words, happy DAL Day! Three years, and over 340 pages long with about 15 - 30 replies a page! Exciting pages of blood, battle, and dark plots! Also, an amazing 5100+ posts, which is about half of last-year-anniversary's amount!
With warm reguards,
Drannic and the Crew.
-
Indeed, happy 3rd Anniversary. It's nice to see a new person so into DAL already. The last few n00bs just made a single post with no capitals or punctuation and then left.
-
Well, hmm... The reason for all of that would probably be because it was the first post on the topic. You have to make a good first impression, you know?
... Yeah...
Anyways, happy DAL Day! May all of your posts be filled with savory goodness, enthralling stories, and blood-thirsty villans who are ready to conquer the foolish masses... Heh... Isn't that what drives Dark Age?
Another thing I would like to state is that if we made this a game, it would blow away anything anybody's ever heard of story-wise. But think for a minute...
Adult Language, Adult Situations, Blood, Gore, Extreme Fantasy Violence, Extreme Good-old Regular Violence (which drives all players and makers, too. Heh.)
What, is it rated A.O. (Adult Only, 18+)!? OMG! I see why we'd just keep this amongst ourselves. Besides, it would probably take two - five years to program... Ah well. At least we get to type, you know?
So, just to continue the conversation, what's your guys' favorite chapters? Mine would have to be twelve, because that's the one I started in (if you call that an excuse. Heh...)
... I'm bored...
See you guys on the Chapter Thirteen Posts!
-
Well, uh, we don't quite have adult situations in there... (Heh...)
Probably my favorite chapter would be 10. Though ridiculously long, this is where a lot of writers really started developing some great plots.
-
Hmm... now that I recall, I did enjoy the descriptive works of chapter one, though grammarically uninclined... Heh. The best part was how Iduran heard a stampede, though it sounded more organized like a march. Then, how there was a scaping metal noise as the dark wave unsheathed their weapons allmost at the exact same time...
If you didn't know before, I like battles on a more massive scale, rather than jus one-on-one with some other person. Although I did like the battle between the martial artist and Draven... Brings you back a ways, doesn't it?
-
Indeed.
Oh, there's plenty of ridiculously massive battles in there. I would classify the battle in chapter 1 as a minor scuffle. (Heh...)
Let see, what was our largest battle? Possibly in the middle of chapter 5, when Draven just assumed control of the Dark Empire and everyone bum rushed the old capital of the Dark Empire (that never really got a name). We had everyone flying around blasting each other out of the sky, demons flying out of portals, giant robots (Eon's weapons were there, right?) and stuff. It was hilarious. The entire city was leveled.
THEN everyone moved on to the final-boss-style battle in the arctic region with Alpha Retan, which nearly destroyed the world. Good times. (Heh...)
I think we've matured a bit for that level of craziness now, instead preferring more down-to-earth scale battles like in chapter 12, which I think are more exciting and interesting to read. Still, I think more massive scale battles are inevitable in the future.
-
I actually would love another insane mass-scale-battle. The ole’ one-on-one fights are fun, but other people never let my characters win. I usually need to have two of my characters duel, in order for one of my characters to win (Heh.)
I think Gerard was the only character of somebody else's I killed off.
Oh and Drannic Lord I wasn't aware that you've been reading the past chapters. I had a feeling somebody else other than the (veteran) players read them.
-
Actually, I kinda just started. I broke it down to around ten pages a day. I'm already on chapter 3! Unfortunately, I have quite a ways to go... Sad
Moving along... MASS-SCALE-BATTLE!?!?!? We need another, especially since I'm now in this! I'll spice things up to a major, more savory read, rather than burn everything down like every other noob eventually does... *Sigh* I'm not saying burning everything down's a bad idea, it's just the fact that EVERYTHIN IS BURNING DOWN! Come on! That's just too plain. Why can't everything be frozen dow, like an ice age or something? Be original!
(Note: That was just for the noobs. Not us... Heh...)
I still like chapter one the best, though, because that was where everything 'kicked off the ground and flew', for want of a better phrase. Ah well, I'll think of something better...
-
Hahahah, yeah you kind of remind me of me, back when I was young and high spirited.
Well, Haraldur usually made mass battled a real hassle, since he had a bad habit of killing entire armies (not to mention summoning insanely huge armies) in one post.
-
Heh...
Modifying the rules every time Haraldur posted was fun.
-
Heh...
Modifying the rules every time Haraldur posted was fun.
You mean you actualy did that?
Man, that DOES sound like fun =D
I wonder how Haraldur took it... heheh...
-
I recall when Xorlak made the "Specializations rule", Haraldur got really pissed, claiming it disallowed a lot of creativity. If you ask me, it just disallowed characters to be cheap and only added some consistency. The specializations was needed from the very start. I was really happy to see it.
-
Haraldur really kind of went crazy with all the powers his characters had, but with all the things they could do, they really weren't that different... I mean, ALL of his characters could do everything that the strongest of his chars could do and the weakest as well. Basically, it's like bots in Unreal Tournament: The only two ways they differed from each other are their name and their appearance. Otherwise, they're all identical to each other.
My favourite chapter was probably chapter 7, which is when I joined. I just remember how much I absolutely loved DAL when I joined it (the first RP I've participated in). This being said, I had absolutely NO idea what was going on, especially since I jumped in media res. Also, I think I've mentioned this before, it includes my best post - the very first one. Really, I don't understand it, but that's how it is. My very first post is the only thing I've ever posted on these forums that I enjoy reading myself.
DM made a few attempts to convince me that my post about the Blue Minotaur temple being destroyed was the best one I've made, but I disagree. It's so... chaotic... everything is in discord.... Oddly, I still can't write a decent post that I can say for sure I will enjoy reading later on.
However, even though my first post involved my (then) flagship character, Ein, my favourite character of my own is probably Kronos. The way that I wrote his posts, from the first person, probably contributed to that.
-
Well, that's a bit strange... If you can't write a post you'll enjoy reading later, then reflect thoughts from your first post. What made it so good? What could you have done to make it better?
Moving along, who's your favorite character that you made? Mine would probably be Jacobie, because he's my first character that got involved into a battle with other people.
-
I really liked Nex and Valos, they were so twisted and insane. However I had to kill them off for storyline reasons. I was thinking of having Valos stay after Chapter 9 and choose to join Duilin, but would have ruined his character. I also liked Abodahon because he was so strong, but I was worried about making a Haraldur character, so I chose to have him killed (By Haraldur, nonetheless).
Also I really like Marshall, because he's much different from my other characters. He's educated and young at hart, plus other than having summoning magic, he's not much more skilled than an average fighter. Despite the fact he's able to defeat several highly trained Kandarin Warriors, but that's merely because he has a character shield (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_shield) and the Kandarin soldiers are just stormtroopers (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stormtrooper_effect). Very Happy
I would say my favorite is Duilin, merely because he's my first character and he (somewhat) reflects who I am. I suppose you could say I "favor" him.
-

Wouldn't that make him a mary sue?
...Myself, I really can't decide. I like them all the best! ^.^
Maybe it's because I only RPed two chapters here...
-
Good question. It's hard to say, since most of my characters have something about them that I really like, or at least one reason they're really fun to write for.
Draven would be an obvious pick. His get-out-of-my-way-or-I'll-blow-your-freaking-city-up attitude is just so cheesy and fun.
Retan is my generic villain. I cannot get enough of generic villains. (Heh...)
Jayce is Draven's complement. They're really fairly similar, except for Jayce's bigotry and more brutish demeanor. They make great rivals who simply just hate each other.
Iduran was just a generic hero to kick things off in the beginning. I actually intended for him to die in Chapter 1, but people kept saving him. (Heh...) His death in Chapter 3 was a well played and powerful moment, though. And I'm glad he got to come back for a bit in chapter 12 to redeem himself. Really, I think that fight in 12 was the only time he actually didn't get beat up in battle. (Heh...)
Neptra was filler, alas. Never had much planned for her except as a temp sidekick.
Alpha Retan wasn't really supposed to be around still, and was only briefly mentioned as being a force in the past with zero intent of doing anything else with him. But I didn't want Haraldur to be disappointed after going through all that trouble and finding the guy didn't exist. What resulted at the end of chapter 5 was possibly my finest instance of zero-planning-freaking-huge-battle-out-of-nowhere. Ah, RPs and their randomness. (Heh...)
I wanted Ven to be a bit more than a generic hero, so I gave him a bit of a dark past and made him more brooding at first. He opens up though later on. I sort of like the guy, though it still remains hard for me to write for just plain "good guys". (Heh...)
Mavas was only filler for Ven's backstory. So to poke fun at this, I made him way over-the-top evil, screaming super cheesy lines all the time and such. (Heh...) He was kind of fun, but I got tired of him. (But did he disapear along with Iduran?!?!?!)
Henri started off as the generic good guy king at first (with third-eye powers for spice) but I had a good chance to develop him a bit in 11.
The Shinryuu were filler side kicks for Draven. I was making fun of the Ginyu Force from DBZ. I do this a lot. (See Jayce's minions in chapters 11-12. Heh...)
Vincent was an interesting character to play with. He was sort of a merger between Dr. Science from DAX and one of those bad dudes from Full Metal Alchemist. Pretty fun, but got tired of him after a few chapters. Too bad he was eaten by a communist. (Heh...)
Virmir is just plain cool. I have so much backstory worked out for the Velkens that hasn't made it into the RP yet, it's ridiculous. Sometimes I forget what I presented and what you guys still have no clue about. (Heh...)
Renard was just a filler NPC for a while. Then I got a little idea which grew rapidly, and he sort of became my main guy in 11. He's got some very obvious strengths (the Velkens as a group are nearly invincible) and some critical weaknesses (alone he's practically nothing). He's got insecurity issues, doubts about what he's doing, doubts about himself, and all that fun stuff. And he's a fox. Awesomeness. (Heh...) Looking back, ironically this little guy is my deepest character yet.
-
Well, you have to admit, there's always a hilarious pun about Dragon Ball Z. It was probably the cheesiest anime series of it's time... plus it's easy to make fun of the freeza saga. I got confused for a few episodes as to whether freeza was a guy or a girl... I mean seriously, he had a very girly voice...
(Side tracking is fun! Razz)
Moving along with the anniversary, which place would you rather live?
Arctic Region, Dark Continent, Tjed, Romme, Helternia, or the Kandarinian Sovereignity? Personally, I'd like to live in the Arctic Region, because almost nothing bad happens there, except for when my Republic had their war there... Heh...
-
Freeza had the voice of a very manly woman, but not quite a womany man's voice, if you catch my drift.
I'd want to either live in Tjed or Helternia. Manly because they're both advanced and somewhar safe. Yet, maybe Helternia isn't safe as of Chapter 11, because it may or may not have been taken over by the Dark Empire or the Kandarin. But who knows? (Heh)
-
Moving along, who's your favorite character that you made? Mine would probably be Jacobie, because he's my first character that got involved into a battle with other people.
However, even though my first post involved my (then) flagship character, Ein, my favourite character of my own is probably Kronos. The way that I wrote his posts, from the first person, probably contributed to that.
Smile
Once again, though, it's really weird. I find myself hating my characters a few posts after their creation, Gerard being one example (which is really the only reason i let him die). The only exception has been Kronos. In fact, I found myself not liking Ein more than a few times, but he's my first character, and I kind of use him as a blank canvas to experiment on, as he is very versatile. I also enjoyed Steorra a little, but ... meh. I began to have strange ideas as to how to use her (no, not those kinds of ideas) so I decided to get rid of her. After Kronos pretty much evolved into my main character, I thought he'd need a love of his life, so I had him resurrect Steorra ("Necromancy. Gotta love it."), though nothing good came out of that.
Another thing is that I used to pride myself on the non-Haraldurness of my characters (i.e. they actually got hit on the rare occasion), now I find that Kronos and pretty much all of my characters are a bit way too powerful. I created Kronos with the idea of a second, less-serious but a bit more gruesome Retan in mind, but that idea pretty much failed. A clockwork-industry nation ruled by a Lich? Please...
I think I know why I can't make a good post. My posts are usually based on one central idea, and once that idea depletes I find myself wanting to say more... That's when things start getting a bit chaotic. Sad
I did have an idea in mind to try and help myself with my posts, and that is to develop some sort of a "skeleton" for a storyline (so far, I've just kind of went along with the flow, thinking up ideas when I wrote my posts). I don't know, though...
Perhaps the fact that English is not my native language (in fact, I've only learned it a good four years ago) may have something to do with this. Then again, I *did* get a higher mark in English than an ASIAN kid who was BORN here (smart + native knowledge of English), keeping in mind he was actually TRYING to complete the course, as opposed to me... God, I don't even know. >.<
-
Yay even though I was only in like 4 or 5 chapters.
-
Ein, you are too hard on yourself. The majority of stuff you write is simply pure gold. The idea here is to have fun. A clockwork nation run by a Lich who passes time by reading elementary magic how-to manuals and writing snide comments in his journal is freaking awesome.
I've learned that thinking up skeleton storylines don't really work in this RP if you want to interact with other characters. It is always good to have a general idea what is going to happen next, but really anything can happen at any time. I've had plenty of ideas completely ruined because some other characters did something or other and then I had to make completely random stuff up on the spot.
So basically all you need to do is keep on doing whatever it is that you're doing. Don't worry about it. (Heh...)
Moving along with the anniversary, which place would you rather live?
Tjed is the place to be. Lush vegetation, tall mountains, natural defenses, yet not so secluded that it's cut off from the world.
I'd like to live in the Arctic Region, because almost nothing bad happens there, except for when my Republic had their war there... Heh...
It's rather frigid there, you know. (Heh...)
And then there was the time Draven set of his CDAA up there and nearly destroyed the world. (Heh...)
Freeza had the voice of a very manly woman, but not quite a womany man's voice, if you catch my drift.
Freeza was so awesome.
"Vegeta just killed Kui!"
"That's okay. I never liked Kui much anyway..."
-
Ah.... wow. Well, thank you!
Where I'd live? DEFINITELY not Kandarin (unless I was Kronos, hehe). I don't even know, nothing seems safe anymore. Hmm... probably Asgarnia, if only Kronos didn't move his troops in it and completely ruined the whole city. No! Glacia. My god, DS's first three posts sent shivers down my spine, where he described the hamlet. I was just like, OMG. If my posts are gold, his are platinum. With diamond studding.
This is actually a fun topic. I was thinking about this for the last while, with all the gods running around, and decided to post it here: the top 10 characters, listed by strength.
(just BTW, I'm not including any characters actually labeled as "gods")
1. Haraldur: No comment.
2. The rest of Haraldur's characters: again, no comment.
3. Retan: Retan, even though a bit, ah, cheesy (forgive me), is really truly awesome. Not to mention really truly strong.
4. Abodahon: A crazed demon, who had sacrifices of 40,000 virgins devoted to him. 'Nuff said.
5. Draven and Jayce: As Xorlak might've mentioned, I think they're very alike. I must admit, though, that one picture of Jayce that Xorlak drew makes him look a bit Asian.
6. Zeros': I haven't really had a chance to interact with Zeros' that much yet, but by the way he acts and the sorts of things he does, I think he'd be somewhere around here.
7. Horus: This guy really took a hardcore beating from pretty much everyone in the RP at the same time, AND blew up, but survived. I can't see myself rating him lower than here.
8. Kronos: Though controlling a good close to 10,000-20,000 corpses at any given time, without them, this guy would be nothing. Stormtrooper effect! Very Happy
9. Midna: I don't think she's an NPC anymore, so I'll put her here. Her crazy arsenal of powers deserves a mention.
10. After about 15 minutes of thinking, I couldn't come up with anything. I guess all the other minor guys would go here: Trent's dudes (and dudette), Ein, Alex, Nick, etc.
To add to the list of questions, what is your favourite NPC?
Mine's definitely de Sade. That guy is pure evil. In fact, I've had a lot of fun posting as him, perhaps more than any other character. I absolutely loved de Sade.
-
My favorite NPC is probably Damion, though I have not used him just yet. I have plans for him, though, mark my words! MEH!
Following down the NPC Road, my favorite hasn't yet arrived. So I guess I don't know... I'm not too pleased with the current crop, if you know what I mean.
My favorite NPCs to mess around with have definately got to be the Lizard people. I just enjoy engulfing the world in their blood with my all intelligent AND powerful Lizard-man Jacobie. He's got a long road ahead of him in chapter thirteen... Heh...
-
Oh stop, you're flattering me. Very Happy
I would probably want to live in Asgarnia prior to the Kandarinian invasion. Something tells me it would be a really nice place to live. Either that or the Twilight, just for the sake of something different.
My top 10 favorite characters/NPCs, whatever.
1. De Sade. That guy is pure evil, and actually very hard to write for, and make it still sound absolutely demented.
2. Alex. Once an ordinary person, turned hero. Is there any better way to spend the weekend?
3. Midna. I basically introduced Midna so Alex wouldn't always be alone. If Alex didn't have someone to talk to, I don't think I could develop him as easily as I wanted to.
4. Carmine. Every evil lord has to have an ass-kissing henchman. Carmine's way with words fits the bill perfectly.
5. Damien Roth. This guy gave Alex a reason to keep going, a reason for revenge. This guy also answers to de Sade, so that makes for some interesting conversations.
6. Kronos. This guy is about as evil as de Sade, which also makes for some interesting conversations. Plus, he's damn creepy. (And the only one to be narrated in first person.)
7. Isaac Kleiner. He gave Alex a durable combat skin. What more can you ask for?
8. Otis. I can't really say what happened to him. He's probably still at rebel HQ. This was just basically to give Alex a companion until Midna appeared. I liked Otis. For a headcrab, he was pretty intelligent.
9. Ilia Savant. Basically to cause some friction between Alex and Midna, causing an interesting triangle.
10. Aurata. Also to cause friction, but also deceived Alex. Strangely enough, Midna was more upset about Aurata than Ilia...
-
3. Retan: Retan, even though a bit, ah, cheesy (forgive me), is really truly awesome. Not to mention really truly strong.
4. Abodahon: A crazed demon, who had sacrifices of 40,000 virgins devoted to him. 'Nuff said.
So you are saying Retan would beat Abodahon is the two were to duke it out at full power? Confused
Interesting...
Speaking of all the pure evil, I can't wait to begin chapter 13...
-
Retan would beat Abodahon. Yet it would be an interesting fight at that.
My favourite NPCs? Well...
1: Melface: This guy brings me back to climax of Chapter 5. He is a pretty good villain. Xorlak should think of making him a character assuming he doesn't get killed off in the next chapter.
2: Bloat: Three words: immune to magic.
3: Lagart: I don't know why, but I seem proud of this lizard man. He speaks terrible English, but he's actually not too dumb.
4: Firstman: Although his spotlight was really only in Post Chapter 10, I think he's a pretty cool guy. I plan to bring him back!
5: Boron: He was such a n00b, but I loved him!
-
A quick offtopic remark: I just noticed that both my and Xorlak's first posts start eerily similar.
Xorlak: Silence. Dead silence.
Me: Cold. Bitter cold.
Keeping in mind that I did not read the first post when I first joined, that came later (don't hate me, please Sad )
-
I was probably ripping off something when I wrote that. So no worries. (Heh...)
So you are saying Retan would beat Abodahon is the two were to duke it out at full power? Confused
Interesting...
Stuff to think about:
- We've yet to see Retan's dragon form in the RP... (Heh...)
- Retan hasn't fought yet. He's cast two cataclysmic spells, but that's it.
- The Dark Empire subjugates demons.
- Retan has commented that "gods" are "inferior". (Heh...)
I'll have a bit more Retan coming for ya'll near the beginning of 13.
-
Hey, yeah you're right. Haraldur DID challenge Retan to a fight but never actually fought him. Retan just simply ripped the sword part out of him and scared him away.
Even with all his fancy powers, he can't even impress Retan.
-
Are you kidding? No body can impress Retan! He's beyond impressing... so don't even try...
Continuing with the anniversary, what was your favorite quotes, be they cheesy or not? Mine was probably in my post with Dori's flash back.
"TIME TO DIE!!!"
(... Yes, I know... it's much worse than anything I've ever written in my entire life... but I don't care...)
-
When Duilin said to Draven...
"Admit it Draven, you fear my power! You're only a human. And I'm the son of the most powerful demon who ever lived, and his power is in me!"
No, seriously the one quote that's on the main page from Abodahon. He totally owned Draven with that line.
-
Actually, my favourite quote comes from the post I've just made.
-"Then go, and may, uh, the blessing of Kronos be upon ye... you all. Yeah. Now get out of my sight."
-
A quick offtopic remark: I just noticed that both my and Xorlak's first posts start eerily similar.

MS are no haters.
-
Hmm... I've just been wondering what's going to happen during the time lapse to next anniversary. What do you guys think? We've got a long ways to go, though...
-
Absolutely anything and everything.
Except a communist takeover.
(Heh...)
-
Hm. Sound like what harauldar would do. Where is he?
-
I think he was referring to him, Burton. But Haraldur went to university or college or something. He said something like that when I last talked to him on MSN a couple months ago.
I really wouldn't mind if he came back, he had some good stuff; it's just his characters were way too powerful. I'd highly recommend to him, to tone down the strength of his characters. I did a few times, but with little success. Remember that one time Duilin actually got a hit on Haraldur, I convinced him to let that happen. But then he instantly healed. Sheesh...
-
And the hellish explosion that faised all of trents people and i wasted a trip to hell.
