Title: You know, this is kinda depressing
Post by: Dude Man on November 02, 2009, 09:24:58 PM
This was the first forum on the internet that I joined. It was really great too, it wasn't too crowded but it had a lot of people that I could talk to. Most of them were pretty nice people, some of them were jerks, but I still loved them just as much as I loved the rest of the people.

For a period of time, this site was probably the only thing going for me at the time. I still had other friends, but I didn't really feel like they cared about me, at least not as much as the people here. Like, at school I'd say something to the guys so I could get there attention, I'd think of something brilliant and hope they'd finally pay attention to me.

They never really did.

But here things were different, whenever I said something here, nearly everyone would read what I said and make a reply to it. Here I actually mattered, and it made me feel happy.

I really miss this place, and it's too bad this forum never meant the same to everyone else as it did to me, and thus nobody continued to post. Yet for some reason I still have this site on my favourite lists, still at the top. It's a terrible shame that nobody ever posts here anymore, and pretty soon this site will be taken down. Hell, I'd ask to host the site myself if I could afford to, but alas, I lack the money.

I've joined another forum, though, with different people, and all of them are pretty nice too. But I'm never going to forget...this was my first and it will always hold a special place in my heart...

Awwww... Yeah, I hear ya.  This was definitely one of the better communities during it's time.  But alas, once DAL ended I got caught up in other projects and this site fell to the wayside on my visiting list.

I currently pay for MS on it's own hosting account and failing that, I'm pretty sure Spyder wants to keep it up.  I've been thinking about moving it to the virtual machine I have my comic websites on to save money, but blast, there are a LOT of games, and I'm not 100% sure we can spare the resources there, since we're constantly expanding.  Either way, I don't think MS is going to disappear anytime soon.  One minor annoyance is that there's no easy way to upgrade the forums... erm... someone installed PHPBB3 when it was still in beta *grumbles*, and upgrades from that aren't supported.  So the forums here are kinda locked in place and I had to disable new user registrations because we started getting a spambot flood a while back.  (Not that there's really a draw for new users anyway.)

Anyway! *hugs everyone nostalgically*

Well, it's nice to know some people still care then.

Anyways, I've moved the Black Walkway to RPGMaker XP. Yes, I have betrayed the toolkit. Progress is much better now that I've switched. Who knows, maybe I'll actually finish the damned game this time? Until then, we can all play my old games. Smile

If you can find me the db data I can maybe take a crack at it. I can also ask how my buddies at the MPT forums fixed the bot problem. That would enable new blood.

Main thing is that there's no real reason to the average aspiring gamemaker to stray from TKZ anymore and the other system's own forums. There needs to be a new value for this site. The question to ask what this site really was.

An example I read about was about a company that make really high-quality drill bits. Best in the industry...until a Chinese company started distributing bits at a better price of comparable quality. They felt doomed. But a few enterprising individuals got together and were weighing options on how to steer the company. WHO ARE THEY? What kind of company are they, really?

They felt doomed as they only thought themselves as a supplier of high-quality bits, their success in the can. But the light bulb went on. They weren't the supplier of high-quality BITS but the supplier of high-quality HOLES. They then refactored their company and became a leading manufacturer of industrial lasers.

There needs to be some laser action here. Good luck. I am here to help.

What we should do...Is band together and have MS be...reborn into something that we can be proud of.

Indie gaming site...perhaps?

Yeah maybe. Perhaps it could be expanded beyond just being about the RPG Toolkit.

Hey, if you folks want to band together and make a new MS, I'm all for it!  I'm sure Spyder will approve, though I'll contact him first before making any major changes to the site.  Unfortunately I've got a bit too much going on right now to help with coding or site design, but what I can do is provide you with perhaps a test subdomain (like newsite.mysticsoftware.com) that will eventually become the new site for you guys to play around with, provided you are able to come up with something.  Spyder's only stipulation when handing over the site for me to host was to keep all the services up (i.e. game downloads, forums), so as long as you intend to keep that, we should be good.

As far as forums go, I've been using Simple Machines on other websites and have had no trouble with spambots on them due to their multiple plugins and stuff against that.  (I would imagine an upgraded PHPBB3 would offer better protection as well.)  If you want to try to migrate the data base to either a current PHPBB3 or Simple Machines, AlienDude, I suppose I can give you access to take a look.  My main concern of course would be keeping the DAL RP intact. ;)

Let me know what you folks think!

All stuff should stay intact. One way is to set up another database just for the new forum and I can take care of all that as I have messed with SMF as well and still have the install for it. Theming is a breeze and yes it's secure.

Though the main thing is the actual site, not the forums. That can be handled within days of the changeover.

You can send the ftp however you wish, email, pm etc.

Likin your comic btw.

You all have a special place in my heart, as cheesy as it may sound.

I've switched to Linux. The RPG Toolkit is no longer an option for me. So I would support any efforts to turn MS into a general indie gaming site, and help in whatever way I can.

I just stuck around for DAL, but it isn't easy to forget a site I spent two years of my life on. I will be here to support any developments in any way I can.

One thing that is definitely going to be needed is tutorials and guides. Lots of them.

About everything!

I've forwarded AlienDude the required info to get started with this project.  Also, I've promoted AlienDude and Dude Man to forum admins.

Good luck, folks!

Thanks, I almost feel undeserving since I can't much more than bark orders and (ab)used my powers. Then again, I guess that's all I really need to do anyways. Razz

I don't visit anymore and just so happen to come here for some research. I remember the first time came here because I had a Mega Man avatar and joined an RP that was going at the time. I also had a comic I used to draw that looked like crap but everyone loved it.

Those were they days indeed.

Hey Xorlak, MysticSoftware means a lot to me, if for nothing more than sentimental reasons.

If you ever want to pass the burden of paying for hosting the site, I'd be happy to fund it's existence.

Oh, and btw, in case there is any confusion as to why I'd be willing to do that, my former alias was matt72186, not sure if everyone knows that....

Sorry I haven't been around to follow up. I've missed all you guys, as well, of course. Especially you, TKGB.

Most of my time has been sucked up by commitments to a group of roleplaying sites. www.mutualendeavors.org, (http://www.mutualendeavors.org,) etc. I've taken on a supervising role at the former; the assistant coordinator of the "Duel of Magic". And an administrative role at the latter, though they haven't yet really asked me to do anything.

I haven't done much of anything with my gaming projects. Not even planning them into text files (and believe me, that's probably something you really want to do). I haven't had the opportunity due to a strained computing situation in our house that was recently resolved. I might be able to help out with game design tutorials once I finish the design, if that's necessary. But after the planning is done, then comes the development, which, on Linux, will be the hard part.

Anyways, the point is, right now, I can't do much aside from cheer you guys on from the sidelines. And I'm happy to do so. You guys and this website created a lot of wonderful memories for me. I'd be absolutely ecstatic to watch this site evolve. I'll try to come by here more often. Barring that, contact details are below:

I'm on facebook. www.facebook.com/twilightinzero
Also on AIM. Eternal EoN 01
And my email is twilightinzero (at) gmail (dot) com

Tosoto, you wanted me to hit you up? Here I am. Have at me. Smile

Hey Trent. I have you on facebook I believe.

But yeah, so far most of what I have seen is the new front page layout made by Tosoto. It'd be nice to see it up and running on teh interweb soon, but hey no rush. Laughing

We're still working on it, I am learning the ins and outs of my friend's framework while Tosoto's busy with school work. DudeMan is setting up a blog 'storyboard' that I will be putting a lot of input on later.

I'll be contacting veterans of all aspects of game creation to assist in the tutorials, and draw from some unconventional sources I know of. It's going to be sweet.

Hey guys. I don't know how many of you will remember me. I'm fairly sure Aliendude and Dudeman will, Possibly Tosoto(I always have to check your name when I spell it) too.

Anyways. After a few looooonnnnng, complicated years. I'm finally able to return to what (still is) my first engagement in a community of some sort. I am back and hope to be very active. I finally have a computer I can call me own that functions(that last bit is a must). I would VERY much like to get into this revive of the community and feel like I just need some instuction on what I could help do. Keep in mind I haven't been able to code since you had to put # before each line of code. I'm definately a bit rusty.

For anyone that needs to contact me just add me on msn/yahoo and let me know who ya are.
quoazie@gmail.com (http://mailto:quoazie@gmail.com)

I'll be checking back up on you guys. Your definately back in my faves bar.  Very Happy
