Title: (no subject)
Post by: Xorlak on January 09, 2004, 07:58:17 PM
Hello, all.  I'll be managing the Shack from here on in.  File submissions will resume as soon as I wade through the PHP (heh...).

Speaking of, should I redesign the site?  Spyder thinks it has sentimental value... but I personally think the design's a little cramped.  If I do redo it, I'd probably make a simple HTML version and accept submissions via email.

i think you shouold redesign only the organization or the front page... take out a few unimportant things... move the sections and stuff...make it less cramped and more easy to get around on the site (not that its hard now)

oh yeah, xorlak, do you no where i can learn html, php, java...something that i could use to make my site better?

my brothers not a ninja

It probably does have sentimental value to people who have been in the community longer thatn me. I suggest that you keep the basic design almost the same, just make it less cramped and nicer to look at.

I believe that the shack will become even better, because it now has competition from the TKZone. With these two resou8rce sites people should be able to find everything they want, especially if there is a little friendly rivalry.

It might be great, and having two resource sites going to greater and greater heights then more people might choose the toolkit and join the community. And even if it does not do that, well, a little competition cannot be a bad thing...

To be honest, I don't think you should redesign it. It's a design everyone is used to and it's perfectly alright as it is.

Just so you know, I coded the PHP behind the shack with Mike, so if you need help, talk to me on msn or aim or something. (AIM: DanC2k3, MSN: i'll give if asked, but not on here.)

In my opinion the Dark Age site has a better layout then the RPGCode Shack. Anyway, the layout at the shack makes me confused, well more confused than normal.

Thanks.  I've been looking at the code and I think I'm getting the gist of it.  I'll send you an email if I get stuck (don't have MSN, or AIM...)

What's wrong with the iframes?  Or are you just one of those anti-framists? (Heh...)

They need to be catigorized and rated manually.

The layout is a bit claustrophobic. And there is a lot of space that could be used but is not.

o theres yr problem. most people have 800x600

I do not like 800x600  much, everything is too big and you can see the pixels.

I've decided to keep the site how it is, at least for now (couldn't resist messing with the front page a bit, though).  Spyder sent me a guide by MrG on how the PHP/database works and it's not as complex as I expected.

I wouldn't say the Shack and TKZ are in competition. The Shack was born when TKZ closed in April 2002, MrG was rpg code manager at TKZ and I gave him the TKZ rpg code resources to start his own site so everyone could still download them. And Spyder did offer TKZ all of the Shack resources, but I refused, even though a lot were off the old TKZ.

So TKZ isn't really here to compete. I think TKZ is the place for tilesets, MS for games and the Shack for coding.

Of course, with MrG...who knows what'll happen with the Shack in the long run.

If there were competition it would still be good, as it might result in more tutorials and stuff being uploaded if there were a freindly rivalry, each site wanting to be a little better than the other.

In my opinion tutorials are more useful than most of the other things. For example: I would really like to read a very good tile art tutorial, like the basics on how to do building tiles etc..

I dont think you should change it, the original way is much more simple, easy to use and very compact.

My only suggestion would be to make the text easyer to read, the dark blue on top of dark purple doesn't work, and I even have my brightness and contrast up allmost all the way.

It is light blue now.

i think that people should put up a lot more crap in the shack so that i can use it all, and Xorlak, but i doubt he would put up his TK God work for all to use  Very Happy

Alright Xorlax.  Staf was doing a terrible job but you are reliable Xorlax.

I believe that the site should remain the way it is.  don't redesign it.  It is what MrG would of want it, may he rest in peace (well he may not be dead in real life but he has died in the TK community  Sad ).

A moment of silence for what? MrG? People who have died (metaphorically speaking) in the community?

Hmmm, this touches the topic you hate so much, like Jorge the monk in "Name of Rose" hated laughing (heh), Haraldur - religion and spirituality, but giving hail to those who died is first true "religious" action documented in nature (among primal people, and not only).

For example, when an elephant dies, the steed remembers exactly where it happens. It is documented that when elephants pass the place where their fallen comrade lied (even if the body has decayed and bones are gone), they stop for a while, as if the wanted to give respect to this place. They are also known to gather and "mourn" over the dead. Tales are heard about "elephant graveyards", where the bones are gathered, but I've never heard any fact which is evidence to that.

Ants (and some other insects), which is sure this time, are known to create "graveyards" where they gather corpses for all dead community members to decay, but this is rather cosmetic than spiritual - in Hive, dead bodies everyone disrupt the systemical life.

Through I see sense in paying respect to the dead, paying respect to the ones which left the community seems less understandable to me...

I feel a little sad when I think about people who have given up.
