All right, im finally going to fight back! Well, sort of. You see, my parents have put a password on my computer (its a dell) and i dont know it. Now i headr that there's a file or something that stores the password and i can access it.
Does any one know a way to find the file, or the password someother way?
(this isnt one of the user passwords, but a start-up password)
-
It depends on your OS, the software, if any, used to set the password and many other factors.
One workaround is to boot up in safe mode and remove it yourself. TO do this- While the computer is booting up...
Windows 98- Hold CTRL until you get a menu
Other - Pound F8 like a maniac until you get a menu
-
well, unfortunatly, the idea i have is not to remove the pasoword, because then they'll know that i have done so.
if i try pressing f8 (i have Windows ME) will it boot in safe mode with out the password being asked, but still have the password on if i shut the computer down?
-
Why did they put a password on your comp in the first place?
-
Probably because they're grounding him or something...
-
I'm not sure, but I think DarkElite may be talking about a startup password in the BIOS, which would pretty much prevent him from getting on at all unless he cleared the BIOS with a jumper, but then that would of course erase the password, and his parents would know. If it is in fact just a Windows password, you could boot in safe mode as KSNiloc said, create an additional user/password. That way the old password would still be there, but you use the new one to get around it. Of course this won't work well if your using WinXP and the users are displayed as icons.
-
You can do it with XP too. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del at the welcome screen and it changes to text logon. Also if you boot in Safe Mode in XP you can access a hidden Administrator account from whence you can do what you want.
-
Do you know how to set the password? If you do, then go there and make a new one up. IF that don't work there is a file, it varys for the computer, in the windows folder. I don't know the etention, just look and see if it's familir.
-
Word2, on 98 there is but not all Windows.
-
DarkElite said startup password....before the F8. So yes, it is a BIOS password. And there is a way to figure it out, from within Windows, if you have the right software. The only problem is, the computer has to be running. The only other alternative is what Spyder said, clearing the CMOS with the jumpers, but this will erase the password, as well as the settings in the CMOS.
-
is there a file i can access without the software?
yeah, MJH is right...i think....it asks for it before it show the loading windows screen with the moving bar at the bottom, but after it loads the dell thing....
grounded...no, they think i spend too much time on the computer...they see it as playing, i see it as learning with fun Razz
-
ok...im searching for files n' junk now...
hmm...i have a file named "Start.EXE" and it says its the windows startup program.....think it could have it?
-
No, as I mentioned earlier, the only way you can do it is by clearing the CMOS. Mike said something about software that will do it....I know nothing of that though. It isn't stored as a file on your hard drive though, it's stored in a chip on your motherboard. Your parents must know something about computers, or know someone who does, to have set the BIOS password. Usually parents wouldn't even know of that feature.
You can do it with XP too. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del at the welcome screen and it changes to text logon. Also if you boot in Safe Mode in XP you can access a hidden Administrator account from whence you can do what you want.
Yes, but if he created another user, it would display as an icon, which would alert his parents of the new user. If he made the login screen permanently a text login screen, his parents would also know something was up.
-
hmm....well, i find it not that hard.....because it dos say "press F2 to enter menu" on the first screen, and then on the menu, it says stuff about a password..
-

I got winXP, it's there.
-
Can't you just press Esc at the password screen?? Man that is ONE thing i like about 98!! Btw the BIOS password only protect them from being changed not to prevent someone from goin on the computer (past experience). I exmperimented with it a long time ago, unless i did it wrong.
-
No, you can set two passwords: one for access and oen for editing the settings.
I know this because my dad and his friends were screwing around with his computer, and they accidently misspelled their BIOS password; I had to get in there and reset it.
-
You could just keep it on default...and just access the main profile through "My Computer"
-
I dont think some people quite get it, yet....its not a profile password, Zero, its the BIOS password (i think, heh...) I guess I'll try to press esc in a min after I finish this post, but hopfully it'll work!!
Holy crap!!! Dont Think So is here!!!! OMG!!! Surprised
-
Dont_Think_So, how did you access the BIOS password?
-
From the CMOS, where everybody else does.
But as far as the program I was saying. The bios is stored on a chip comprised of something called NVRAM. This NVRAM is what can be accessed with a program, and this NVRAM is what stores all the CMOS settings.
If you can get into the CMOS....which should be rare considering a BIOS master password prevents all access until it's entered....it may be possible to reset the password....depends on the CMOS.
-
Non-Volatile Ready Access Memory: RAM that doesn't get erased when you shut down or when you unplug it. Hop I got that right.
When my mom forgets to take out the monitor cable again i'll play around and see what comes up *evil grin*. hmmm what did they say about payback.... hee hee
-
darn it.....so....there's no hope for me??.... Sad
-
You could always beg your parents or guess at the password or try to watch their hands next time they type it.
-
*evil grin* Or you could have somebody surreptitiously send a key logger. Ahhh the evilness...
-
As the password is in the BIOS, key loggers would do nothing unless it was a hardware key logger attached to the computer between the port and the keyboard cable.
-
hmm...where could i find one of those?
-
here
-
What a killjoy...ooohhhh he he *evil grin*
-
darn it!! too expensive for my blood...
-
Whoa! Glad I'm poor! Razz HEDAHEDAHEDAHEDA! Okay I'm back........
-
I wonder if they were stupid enough to go with the default password. Which BIOS?
American Megatrends Inc default use to be "ami"
try it.
If it is a Bios password youll know because it will lock you out after 3 tries. Then to even enter the bios you have to enter the password.
-
Ok, I think I have an idea. A hacker friend of mine has a copy of a special LINUX made CD. You boot the computer with the CD in and pound any key untill the menu for the CD pops up. Once you got that, it'll jump right into windows, bypassing ANY password software. I used to to take out the network for a few days at my school when they banned my account, lol. The Computer Tech guy originally made it so he could reset the administrator password on the computers so we could re-ghost them (a neat thing that you can do with NOVELL Client). I'll see if she'll make me a copy for myself, and I'll send it to you however you want. It's all good.
-
Problem is that it's not a Windows password, it's a BIOS password, which would prevent him from even booting a CD.
-
ouch. ok, nvm that. what about start up disks... oh wait, have to get past BIOS first to use them too... Ok, I'm outta idead than other than the external keylogger.
-
Or do some real bribeing/sucking up/hypnotising to your parents to get them to tell you the password, OR! You can hire A SUPER DUPER COMPUTER HACKER WHO IS 35 AND HE LIVES IN HIS PARENT GARRAGE to do it for you.
Wait...I have an idea, that will probally work! But it's a little farefeched....
-
Well, like I said, if you could find the CMOS reset jumper on your motherboard, that would probably work. Unpluging your computer, and taking out the CMOS battery might work as well, but again, they'd know something was up if you did either of those.
-
dude, it looks like you're screwed. Just watch they type it in if you can, or better yet, if they don't want u in the room, mount a camera somewhere to watch the keyboard, lol.
McDonalds kid: "Hey, it could happen"
-
Well I know that back when I was a computer technician, BIOS manufactures had a lot of backdoor passwords. I'm not sure if they still do that though, this was in the mid to late 90s. Look up your bios manufacturer in google and "default password", IE Pheonix default password, see what you find.
-
Hmm. I never knew that. Learn something new every day.
Dragonmaster, if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? It's been a while since we had many people over the age of ~25, and the above post suggests you could be. You don't have to post if you don't want to of course, I'm just curious. I'm one of the "older" members of the community at 22.
Oh, and welcome to Mystic Software Smile
-
Yep I read that Award no longer does defaults anymore, they require that the OEM sets their own default bios pass up. Not sure about AMI. It's worth a shot
Actually Im 26, born March 4th 1978, just to verify. I started working at FSU as a computer tech while I was in my senior year of high school. I guess I am one of the older members. err oh well.
Thanks for the welcome message Spyder. Ive been coming to MS(not to be confused with the other MS) for about 2 months now, but never checked out the forums. I started designing a game about 4 years ago while in college, thinking since I was in the computer science program, I should be able to write a game in C++. Ha! I didnt know what I was getting into. I kinda tried off and on until May of 2004 when I found the TK. I'm glad I found it, as it is much easier. Anyways I know you didnt ask for my life story, sorry about that.

Person1: "So you like to bait your own hooks huh?"
Person2: "Yep, I like to, I think I am pretty good at it."
Person1: "So, would you call yourself a master baiter?"
-
lol, no prob. I have a habit of doing that as well. Besides, that's what a community is all about, getting to know one another. We had a 63 year old in the community at one point....that was many years ago. I think CBM is the oldest TK member at the moment...I think he's ~28. You started coming to MS at a great time. Although the user base is small at the moment, the site itself has never ran as well in it's 4+ year history, and only good things are to come B)

Dark, if you still dont have the password, go to http://www.atstake.com/products/lc/ and get that program and readt tutorials. It will work, it was shown on the Screen Savers.
-
Again, it is a BIOS password preventing him from booting the computer. It is not a Windows program, and thus, that program will not work.
-
If thats true...then how is he posting on the forums?
-
my parents type the password in for me, but i cant look....
-
Ask a friend for a video camera...and then turn off the PC then tape it, duh.
Or take all the keys off, then place something under the keys so you can see which ones they pressed.
Haha.
-
hmm...maybe....it i can get a paper under the keys, and ink on the keys.......with out it screwing it up.....it would work................ummm, i think ill just try the camera......i need a REALLY small one though... Wink
-
Or just get a big camera and hide it behind some books to make it look like you were doing something.
-
I guess im up there (almost 21). DarkElite, how good are u with electrical engineering??
Z, purple?? BAD MONKEY!!! Dark Board can't see!!
-
I think im the youngest here, i'm 11, but i actually started messing with the toolkit when i was 8 and a half.
also, aliendude, highlight the purple text to read it.

WOah, there's a lot more posts since I left one... The stupid button thingy that changes to a different color when there are new posts hasn't been changing, and I just now figured this stuff out, just gotta keep dumping my temp files and setting it to accept almost nothing. That's better. And that's all awesome guys. Rock On!
-
Did he say...Rock On?
*Jumps away, jumps back with electric rock guitar and starts to ROCK ON!!!!!!"
Laughing YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!

im going to try the camera in a few days.....
Only 11 N8? Holy crap!! thats 3 years younger than me!! Do you know the programming yet? Surprised
-
Yeah I knew that the wole time! And he is still my friend. And I'll have you know, he is younger then Dippy.....Just goes to show you that if your older then somebody dosen't mean your smart.
I'M STILL STRONGER AND SMARTER THEN DIPPY AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO I AM OLDER THEN!
I'm not sure who I'm older then...I think I'm older then...

Ill be hitting 15 soon. So ill be older then most people..I think...
-
I'm not a lawyer, but I have studdied parts of the law. I want to learn more on it, but I won't become a lawyer, although the money is awesome!
-
Guess whos back? Very Happy
Oh, and about the BIOS thing...
You can manually turn the BIOS password off without any software, but then your parents will know you changed it...
I only tried this on a Dell, so I'm not sure if this is the case with other computers...
Open up the case. Somewhere in that mess of circuits you should see a jumper and a plugin. Here's a diagram:
__
| |
v v v
The jumper should be plugged into two of the three slots. Move teh jumper to the other two slots, and it bypasses teh CMOS settings. Or perhaps it resets it? Either way, when you start the computer, there will not be a password, even if you move the jumper back.
-
Yea, I had to do that with my Dell after I didn't use it for a while. I forgot the pass and just played with teh jumpers. internal stuff is fun!
And it's awesome to see you back DTS!!!
-
Yeah, we already suggested this method, but he's trying to do it so the password still exists, but he can somehow bypass it, or find it out.
-
Dark Elite already left...so this topic is kinda useless now...
-
If anything, you could re-format your HD to whipe it out.
Or may a key logger to get the password they enter ^_^.
-
keyloggers only activate after the BIOS has already started the computer up, and yes, this topic should be close now...
-
And reformatting the HD will not clear a BIOS password
-
keyloggers only activate after the BIOS has already started the computer up, and yes, this topic should be close now...
Nah, they should work right when your computer boots up. At least that's what I remember reading. At any rate, we've already decided that keyloggers arn't a practical solution for someone who can't afford them.
-
exactly. And spyder, the kind of Keylogger I was talkin about is a software keylogger Smile
-
Ah, I see.
-
it's all good Wink
-
i have a dell inspirion 1000 and i put a password on it to keep my siblings from logging on and now the password doent work the password was abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz but i held down the fn key so it turns out different i tried again and again please tell me how to get in oh ya its just the user name password that you can put on in the control panel i am running on windows xp home edition
