I'm contemplating doing the graphics to "Misadventures in Nowhere" entirely out of scans of black-and-white pencil & ink sketches. What do you think?

Cool idea! Why the hell not? It will add up lots to climate and make gaem unique.

The above sketch I just slapped together in about 20 minutes.
It's a first pass at the first still in the "animation" depicting the black-elf outlaw Dirc Mal'Kir firing a widowmaker at some opponent

(Regardless of how I do the overall graphics, battles will feature short animations done like that)

That picture should give you an idea of my drawing skills and represents the style that would be used if I were to do all graphics in the game with sketches

EDIT: note that the picture is a digital photo, not a scan, 'cause I don't have a scanner handy at the moment.
I also realize that there are some slight proportion problems, outside of the stylistic exaggeration of certain areas (most noticeably: his waist is too low. If you didn't already notice it, I'm sure you can now. And it will haunt you. Like it's haunting me now). Like I said, this was done in 20 minutes and i just the first pass at sketching that event

Hey! This really sounds cool, comparing sketch, game project and climate...

Thank you, Cesque!!

If things keep going at the rate they are, I should have a demo ready in about a month

you can't see the pic? That's odd. Here, just go to http://photobucket.com/albums/v53/foolish_...rrent=dirc1.jpg

If the graphics are good and fit the atmosphere of the game, who cares?

Interesting...take a good look at the gfx from SaGa Frontier 2 (color scheme, shading, etc) for some good source material. I think it was done very well in that department. YOu could of course have a base of black and white with color accents. That's my suggestion. You can have a little color and still preserve your original scheme.

SaGa Fontier 2 has some great graphics, but such colorful watercolour graphics would be totally inappropriate for MaNw. I think it would need to be either the grit of straight black-and-white sketches, or some sort of simulation of sepia photography, which would be way too difficult

What i meant was use the "watercolor" feel, but make it very bland, as an accent, still having a focus on the inking.

Go for it. Having an original graphical style is always a good thing.

i seem to be alone in prefering color games. i voted (you didn't give me a "i'd prefer a little color" option!), but then i saw your sketch. it looks very nice, and i really wouldn't mind a game like that. go for it!

Why not?

It's creative, and original.

Something fresh, and new.

A style that is very welcomed, and should be an eye-catcher.

Go forth, and prove it so! Very Happy
