General Discussion / 10 years in the TK community
« on: December 29, 2011, 12:50:47 PM »

On December 24th, I have become 10 years old on the RPGToolkit comminty. Don't know if that is the exact date but I remembered one day, a long time ago, that I wanted to figure out when I came into the RPGTK community and looked at my old account way back on the old RPGToolkit.com site, the one when CBM was at the helm and I recalled it said 12/24/01. So yes, it's been 10 years and so much has changed. In fact, too much has changed. The new TKZ is new and improved but, man, the community is different. And this place is now a museum of the old TK community, which I feel like talking about (I feel a bit nostalgic right now).

I've told this story before but it was a long time, so I feel like refreshing myself. In August 2001, my parents bought our first computer. I don't know why but they did. It had Win98 and sometime later we got internet. All I did was play RuneScape on it and back then thought it was the greatest game in the world, probably because it was the only game I played at the time (I didn't had any video game consoles back then). I was such a big fan of RuneScape that I wanted to check out sites and one site that was called RuneScape Hall caught my attention and spend alot of time in the site. In this website there were links to the bottom that could've been an ad but am not sure. It was for a site called RPGMaker.net, a database for RPG making engines. I was still new to video games so I did not knew what a RPG was. But I checked out the site and it gave me choices on what engine I wanted to use and decided to go with RPGToolkit, and I feel in love with it the first time I downloaded it. It was version 2.1 or something like that and I spent like 4 months making and completing a game. Those were good times. And sometime on December I joined the TK community.

And that is pretty much my story, and you know, the TK community is still the only community online that I have high regards for. That was my second online community that I joined and I thought back then that every forum was going to be like that. It's been 10 years and I have yet to find another community as close as the RPGToolkit. Though it is slow now, it's still has some of the oldbies from way back then. Not many online communities have people like that. But not just people but product as well. We have a library of games that, though are now old and outdated, are still part of the community. Maybe it has something to do with the oldbies attachment to their creations because I've been to other communities where the games or whatever product was created was left on the site, never to be talked about again. Other sites have tried to get recognition to their products but to no success.

I could talk all day about the old RPGToolkit but, it's all just nostalgia now. The new TKZ, which is nice, it's not the same thing. Heck, the reason why I'm posting this on MS is because this is the last remnant of the old RPGToolkit community, and it shows. The new TKZ is now of the future, whatever future it is.

Well that's pretty much what I wanted to say. I'm 10 years oldbie in the TK community, had some great times but the times have changed. Everything has changed, and yet my home button on my browser, after 10 years, still links to rpgcommunity, even if I don't visit it. That just shows how much this community has impacted me.

See ya later.

I don't visit anymore and just so happen to come here for some research. I remember the first time came here because I had a Mega Man avatar and joined an RP that was going at the time. I also had a comic I used to draw that looked like crap but everyone loved it.

Those were they days indeed.

You all have a special place in my heart, as cheesy as it may sound.

I've switched to Linux. The RPG Toolkit is no longer an option for me. So I would support any efforts to turn MS into a general indie gaming site, and help in whatever way I can.

Oh crap. It's BDE. I thought you disappeared for good. Man how I missed you and your game.

Hey Xorlax, there seems to be one entry I can't get the name from. It's called Adventure and it was submitted in the Slanted and Enchanted contest but there is no info on the creator. You wouldn't happen to know who created that game would ya?

Hmmm... no idea what happened to that one. That must be how he uploaded it.

Yeah... making mini games like this and submitting them as "full" games at the TKZ is pretty lame.  (Heh...) But your compilation idea sounds nifty.  I don't want to mess with it, but if you can track down the authors for permission and make the compilation yourself, go for it.  You can use my entries if you'd like.

Cool. I'll ask around the community and see what I come up.

The idea to submit entries as stand alone isn't lame if you spruce up the game. John's Bus Driver is a good example. That wacky song gets me everytime. Very Happy

ARGH! Only MrG's duck program exists. What happened to the others?

Anyways, the idea that I have:

I've checked these out and realized that some are good enough to be stand alone games. In fact, some of them went on to be that. So I just had an idea that someone should make a compilation game from these and submit it to TKZ. If you can get permission from the creators, would you do it? I would love to do this and put it under the RPGCode Shack name if you can't.

I have an idea I want to ask but it has to do with the RPGCode Shack Challange entries, which are not available. Where are they?

Yeah, we pretty much closed down everything and made MS a nostalgia-only site.

I just thought of something. Ain't that pretty much a museum?

@ Dude Man: It might interest you to know that like 2 years ago, or along that era, I burned all TK games hosted here into 2 discs and they take up 2 gigs of space.

EDIT: I should also mention this. MS might still have TK games that are in the server but not in the website. Two years before backing up all the games in the site, I uploaded my game and discovered TK games sitting in the server but not beign show on the site. I don't know how many but I found a game called Grand Master Shin Wu that is really, really old from the days of TK2's prime along with the demo for the first blobs game, which became Annihilation four years later. If you haven't touched the games section in the two years I discovered this, then they should still be there.

I'm not here to upload a new game, I'm here to upload an old game. My old game Everlasting. The battle system was messed up but I fixed so now it's playable.

Will you guys be doing anything on the games of this site? I currently lost my memory stick with alot of TK games on it. Luckily for me it was only the ones I downloaded here at MS so I'm trying to redownload all of them.

Answers? Answers were the only thing he didn't need. He spent all his life not bothering with questions, but alas, all was different now.

The wreckage proved nothing of the man that once appeared before him and thus left. That was days ago. Now what? Quadricentennial now had to live among 'those who burn with the sun' as he called them since he always lived in darkness. He was used to the cold but the sun was just fine. He yet again tore up his shirt again from the last battle. He needed a new one. He went about, to search for something to cover himself with. Maybe hunt some wild animal for it's fur. He didn't knew what to do exactly, he never ventured outside. He was truly lost. He didn't knew what to do. Where to go. What his life's purpose was. He figured he'd just find a dark cave and forget the whole nonsense about the mysterious old mad that appeared from a plant. Yet he felt something strange whenever he thought of the old man. As if he knew him. That would be impossible since he never knew anyone but his owls and his little nana Sweetness. Whoever this old man was had a hold on him. So he would figure he would just aimlessly walk around and let the purpose come to him.

And so he does.

Awesome. Thanks for the compliments. Hope you don't mind the rush looked on it. I don't want to spent an eternity on this.

EDIT: I've done another page.

I was planning it on doing it word by word from the RP but it seems that I may sometimes improvise.
