"He didn't say much actually. He told me why he was in the valley and that was it really. He had an evil surrounding him like I have never seen. I am worried he'll become a great danger and threat to everyone very soon. I just hope we don't meet in battle because he called me out!" Coriko shuddered at the thought of fighting Druid. "So what now are we going to go meet up with Marshall and Wilham?"

---

Druid stood inside the earth. A small hole chiselled into the ground. He missed Silas and was about a few metres below the surface. Slowly Druid took a deep breath in. He then rapidly breathed out, thrusting his elbows into the surrounding dirt. It expanded with him rocketing outwards. Druid saw Silas get caught in the blast and fly backwards, and like expected he landed on his feet.

“Good he has his wits about him,” thought Druid “I was starting to think this would be over quickly. I want to make him suffer.”

“Took you long enough,” Druid yelled at Silas! “I was worried you were going to be a pushover. All those years my servants catered to you I was worried would soften you up.”

Druid launched himself forward to punch Silas. This time Silas was ready though. He slid out of the way and grabbed Druid’s neck and slammed him into the ground. Silas then started to punch Druid’s face repeatedly. Druid caught one of Silas fists and twisted it back. Silas screamed in pain and yanked his hand back and cradled it with other hand. Druid lifted up his legs and kicked Silas in the chest knocking him backwards. Druid then put his hand on the ground and summoned a pillar of shadow energy to hit Silas before he hit the ground. Silas was knocked up into the air. Druid then jumped up to the same height as Silas and kicked him in the chest send him flying backwards. Silas rolled and then leaped to his feet.

Druid then shot a blast of shadow energy at Silas, who ducked out of the way. Silas then melted into the ground. Druid tensed up preparing for an attack. Silas shot out of the ground in front of Druid upper cutting him. Druid was knocked backwards. Silas then summoned a blade of light energy.

“It ends here!” Silas plunged the blade down towards Druid. Druid moved his body so the blade avoided his heart, instead piercing him just above his right hip. He groaned loudly and grabbed Silas’s hands. Silas twisted the blade laughing maniacally. Druid gripped Silas’s hands which were on the hilt of the sword with one hand and moved the other hand down to where the blade entered his skin. With a swift motion Druid snapped the blade, leaving half the sword inside. Silas fell backwards in surprise. Druid stood up clutching the wound, towering overtop of Silas. Druid lifted up his foot and then slammed it down. A shockwave of shadow energy caused a ripple propelling Silas backwards.

Druid collapsed onto his knees. He coughed up some blood. Silas stood ready to attack. Druid looked up at Silas and smiled with his blood coated teeth. Silas was truly terrified at the moment and knew who would win the battle. Druid then shot a blast of shadow energy at Silas. It hit Silas in the shoulder knocking him backwards. This gave Druid enough time to stand up. Silas leaped up and fired a bolt of light energy at Druid, who returned fire.

The two bolts clashed fighting for supremacy. Silas started putting more force in his blast. Druid was tired from the previous fights and was running low on energy. He was also in a lot of pain cause of the light energy sword embedded in his shadow energy body. Silas started to walk forwards, forcing Druid to drop to his knees. Silas was almost right on top of Druid, the light energy completely encircling Druid. A boom was heard and Silas was propelled several feet backwards. He looked up and saw Druid had changed. He was completely encased in shadow energy, similar to his shadow warriors. The light energy blade embedded in Druid sparked and was crushed by the pressure of the shadow energy. Silas tried to crawl away. He even jumped up and started to run away in fear. Druid slowly walked towards it. Silas turned and started firing blasts of light energy at Druid but the darkness and intensity of the shadow energy just absorbed it and he kept walking. Druid stopped and stood in front of Silas, who was on his knees cowering.

A new and terrifying voice echoed out of Druid and it was nothing Silas had heard before. It was deep and seemed somewhat cosmic. “Silas Firesen, you have committed numerous acts of treason and heresy against the ruler of your world. You have raised a rebellion and banished him from his world without the authority of us, the Divinity Counsel.”

“Oh god, I thought the divinity counsel was an old myth told by our elders to keep us in line!”

“Silence, the Divinity Counsel is the all mighty court, overseer of all matters, the supreme judge and jury. We restore order to the original plan. Those who deviate feel our wrath. We have warned you before for the wrongful acts you have committed but you have ignored all of our warnings! You, Silas Firesen, have been found guilty of the criminal acts previously mentioned. Your punishment since you did not hold fast our previous warnings will receive the ultimate punishment, DEATH! First all your powers and abilities will be transferred to the victim of these acts. Participate in this un-intrusively and your death will be quick and painless. Hinder this process and you will incur a death only bestowed upon the ultimate criminals!"

“Yes, of course.”

Druid placed his hands on Silas’s head and his eyes seemed to have a black smoke emit from them. Silas screamed in pain as his energy was drained, but did not resist. As the power left Silas and entered into Druid, it was converted into shadow energy. This transfer gave Druid a significant increase in power. Once the transfer was complete Druid lifted his hands off Silas, who collapsed. Druid blew out a small cloud of shadow energy and smiled.

“Well thank you Silas. Your power will be a welcomed addition to my own.”

“But… but the Divinity Counsel... I heard them speak through you…they condemned me to death!”

“Oh don’t worry your still going to die, but I figured for all the inconvenience you have caused me I wanted restitution. And you wouldn’t have done it willingly unless there was something that benefited you. So I used those old myths from our world to scare you into doing it. Otherwise it would have been very cumbersome. Now to deal with you, Silas Firesen.”

Druid summoned a small amount of shadow energy to encase Silas. Silas then hovered up in the air and was stretched out by the shadow energy.

“Now, this may hurt just a little.”

Slowly at the tips of each limb Silas started to dissolve into the air. Screaming in agony Silas started to disappear into the air. Druid stood and watched the entire time, not taking his eyes of Silas once. He had waited a long time for this and would be a shame to look away now. Once Silas had completed dissolved into the air Druid turned around. Behind him he saw a group of about twenty individuals all bowing down to him.

“Aw, now this reminds me of home.”

"My lord, I'm sorry to disturb you, but lord Aaron has returned to Ariosis."

"I know."

"What? Aren't you going to send a strike force there, my lord? They could be on there way here as we speek! Would you like me to gather your army?"

"I did send a strike force. You were a part of it, don't you recall?"

"Yes, but you must send more men after him! He's gathered the riders from the south and plans to recapture the palace of the emperor! You must-"

"I MUST WHAT!? Shut you ignorant mouth, you idiot! I will kill him myself if he so much as swings a sword in my direction!"

"... Sir"

"WHAT!?"

"He's on his way here... I could assemble the army if you like..."

"Yes, yes, why don't you go ahead and send a few more forces after Aaron. It's only a matter of time before I get the chance to see him in person... as I sit in his throne! MEH!"

------------

The horselords brought their army across a few villages that were still loyal to Aaron and sent off soldiers as they passed by. His army grew and grew until he finally decided to make camp at Vol Duria, an elven city deep within the forest to the west, the forest of Nurngar. He lead the small party into the woods. Vol Duria is a bit of a walk...

The academy was nearing its completion. It was a vast building, located somewhat to the west of Gros Morne. It appeared to be of a coliseum-like structure: the actual building was surrounding an inner arena. The building itself had several mammoth bones sticking out of the ground in a claw-like fashion, supporting the rest of the stone and flesh. Many Kandarinians were putting the finishing touches on the structure, while the academy itself already began operating...

---

Jorge and Andre stepped back, with a full squad of Vanguards behind them.

-"You! Heed!"

The mighty machine finally stopped evolving. It had a pair of large fleshy wings, and small pieces of bone filling in every crack that the armour had in it before. Despite this, it appeared to move better than without the flesh infestation. Now it was just wandering around the lab aimlessly.

-"Creature! You are a Kandarinian war asset! Stop! We are your lords! You are under our control!"

The mechanism appeared to pay no heed to the scientists' preaching. It continued to move about, destroying much of the lab's equipment in the process. Jorge finally gave up screaming at the monolith.

-"Andre, I think it's a dead try. We need to put some intelligence inside there. That brain that it has grown doesn't do much other than body control. I don't think it can actually really comprehend anything..."

-"I guess we'll have to call the Scribe of Undeath back, then. Maybe there's some extra soul collecting dust in a soulstone, which we could use to control that..." He waved his hands. "That."

-"Good idea. Go ask her."

Taking large steps, Quad continue to run through thick, black smoke. He recognized the forest in his memory but thinking that the trees could move could jeopardize his memory. He continued to run, avoiding anything he could manage to make out through the thick smoke, which was no easy task. The trees made no noise themselves and the sounds of steps and creeks were drowned by the burning flames consuming the woods. Quadricentennial thought nothing of it and continued to run. It wouldn't be long before he reached the end and with his new strength, trees could be smashed down easily. He continued to run when suddenly the smoked cleared. He was outside of the forest. He looked backed and saw fire burning terribly the black forest Campaign. The trees were on fire but they continued to chase but were confused and could not find Quad. Yes, he was targeted just as the old man said. The trees were trying to kill him. Quad caught his breath and sat down, watching the trees thrash around in flames as if they were in eternal damnation.

//Drannic, did you forget to update Ben? Or are you just thinking of what to do with him?\

The vanguards were set up in the towers of Vandrin's castle. They would use their mortars at any lizard men that tried to get near the castle.

Meanwile Count Vandrin and the Kandarin soldiers exited the castle, and began to start hunting down lizard men.

"So they're needed alive. Luckily I have learned a sedative poison spell..." Vandrin said.

"Good for you." One of the speargunners retorted.

"You know, you could treat me with a little more respect!"

The speargunner smirked "I could now, couldn't I?"

---

Marshall and Wilham went up a set of stairs, when the got to the top, they could hear people speaking in the other room.

"So, uh these mortar guns, how strong are they?" One of the voices asked.

"Would you stop asking me that?" A deeper voice snapped back.

"Must be a servant and a Kandarin trooper." Marshall whispered. He then took out his MagiPistols. "I'll take care of them."

Marshall sneaked to the door way, he saw a large burly man, with some sort of big weapon. He aimed his magic pistol with the blue gem at him and fired. An ice shard then shot out and struck the burly man in the back. He yelped in pain and then turned around, angrily.

The servant then stepped backwards and shielded himself with his arms. "Please don't shoot me!"

The vanguard stomped towards Marshall. "You're gonna pay for that pipsqueak!" He growled.

Marshall aimed his guns at the big man, but he dashed towards him and grabbed his wrists, throwing off his aim and Marshall shot an ice shard and a fire ball at the roof. The vanguard pushed Marshall down on the floor, through the door way making Marshall drop his weapons.

The vanguard stepped through the door way laughing. He then noticed a man in a white robe, with two golden gauntlets. Wilham then dashed towards him and swung a punch at the vanguard's face, yet his fist was knocked off course by the vanguard's larger hand. With his other hand, Wilham swung an uppercut straight at the vanguards jaw, knocking him out cold and into the wall behind him.

Marshall got back up and picked up his weapons. "Tie him up." He said motioning to the vanguard. "And the servant too. I'll look around for the tablet."

--- ---

"Well, I'm not sure." Firstman said. "But it's either that or waiting here. The guys did bring some wyverns, however. We could ride them over to the Vandrin County, but it's a long trip. You up for it?"

He saw the incoming blade of fire, and brought... an arm up? Well, it wasn't an arm anymore. It had changed into a blade of sorts, and the energy looked to have become more dense in that area, while less dense in the rest of his body. It was sufficient to block the blow. "You're good... but I'm better." The hand he still had was pointed at Draven's torso, and it was used to fire a large energy blast at him.

"Hmmm, interesting..."  The child-like demon put a hand to his chin.  "So this Demon Lord's name is Duilin?  I know for sure he has at least one other form-- that of a half human with wings...  I suppose he would be able to blend in with the humans easily... Yes, I will help you.  So long as his death is slow and painful..."

A maniacal glint glistened in his eyes.

"Now if those haughty foxes are conspiring with a Demon Lord not in the service of the Dark Empire, they may be organizing a rebellion...  If we could uncover this ploy, then surely we will be rewarded beyond our wildest dreams..."

He turned to look at the island in the distance.

"We'll likely have to sneak back in... Problem is, the Velkens have sensitive noses... they'd be able to pick me up a mile away..."

----

"Looks like our werewolf friend has quite the connections," Vincent said as he dismounted, "we're amassing quite an army."

"A fair fight might be possible at this rate.  Just the way I like it," Ven replied as he joined Vincent at the back of the party.  It seemed they would be walking a bit through the forest. "So, why all the secrecy?"

"You're full of questions, aren't you...?" Vincent removed his glasses and gave them a quick cleaning with a cloth. "I was a general of the Crimson Empire."

"Really?"  Ven seemed aghast."

"A colonel in the Dark Empire before that too, ironically."

"So... change of heart?"

"Not quite.  You see, my latest alliance was with the Grey Empire.  I turned traitor.  Thousands of Crimsons died because of me."

Ven didn't say anything.

"Some... things... happened... and I found myself without a nation long after the Grey Empire fell...  I fled to Tjed.  I would have stayed there, had Draven not shown up again..."

"I see... the mighty Crimson Emperor returns... without an empire no less."

"I'm not sure if he knows what I've done, but I'm not going to take any chances.  He doesn't take kindly to traitors..."

Ven frowned.  "Well, then.  I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"I just thought you had something to fight for.  Kinda depressing.  Instead, you're just running away-- ... I apologize.  That was rude of me."

"Think nothing of it."

Vincent's shoulder twitched.  He gripped his arm.  Blast it.  He hoped it wasn't coming loose again...

----

"Oh... you think that's FUNNY, huh?"  The short black robed lizard puffed himself up.  "Beat her up first."  He pointed at her with his staff.  The four gigantic Lizard Men smiled, surrounding Indher and extending their claws.

"Why is there a disturbance in my dungeons?"

Everyone froze.

Grav's eyes went wide and he began shaking.  He slowly turned.. craning his head to look at the massive shadow behind him.

"D-D-Dark-k-k...Em--Em--"

"If there are problems dealing with prisoners in a quiet and efficient manner," the Dark Emperor Retan boomed as his glowing red eyes narrowed, "then changes will be made."

Everyone bowed, groveling on the dirty floor at his sight.

"Who is this?"  He demanded, looking straight into Indher's soul.

"A mighty summoner, my liege!"  It was the skunk, Kelmar.  He jumped up and bowed on one knee in front of the woman, spreading one arm to his side.

"She is capable of summoning demon gods from the underworld!"  He said with dreamy eyes. "We've brought her here in your exhaled service!"

Grav's jaw dropped.

The Dark Emperor looked down at him.

"Who are you?"

The skunk flinched.  "Captain Kelmar, ground scout 3rd class, Gaian divisiOOOONN!!"

He was suddenly sent flying through the air and slammed against the far wall.

"Do not approach me unless I give you permission."

His eyes shifted back to Indher...

----

Draven suddenly found himself blasted backwards, rocketing towards the ground.  With a mighty heave he pushed the energy blast to the side, sending it careening into the ocean.  Blast it!!  Clenching his teeth he slashed the air in two with his burning blade, sending a crescent shaped wave of fire rocketing towards the demon.  The energy blade grew as it distanced from him, becoming over fifteen feet long.  As soon as the first was loosed, he brought the blade up and sent another... then another...

//To those whom it may concern: My computer has been struck down by the mighty Chernobyl virus, and my hard drive is officially slain. This being said, I won't be able to get onto MSN for the nearest few days, but my posting will be consistent - I can use my mom's laptop.\

Meanwhile, a squad of KAF was fending off the lizards at the gates of the Vandrin castle. Even though speargunners and Vanguards were doing quite well, and the lizardmen were forming a rather large pile in front of the gates, ammo was running thin. Several lizardmen managed to breach the defense, and kill a few unsuspecting Kandarinians by a stab in the back. The infiltrators were quickly put down, but it was clear that the defense would not be able to hold for long. In desperation, the commander of this particular regiment pulled out his M-Grid comm orb and targeted the Gros Morne citadel...

An image of him appeared in the middle of the subterranean bunker located beneath the main citadel, built for planning military attacks. Apparently, there was a council in progress - Kronos himself was present, as well as the two scribes, of Undeath and of Unlife. The commander also felt Damien lurking behind him. The Marshal was the first to speak.

-"Yes, of course it's alright for you to interrupt a meeting concerning the matters of life and death... heh. Life, death," he said, looking at his two scribes. "Anyways, I'd like to hear a good reason for interrupting your Sovereign."

-"Mar - er, Sovereign, we are under heavy attack here at Vandrin County. Request immediate assistance!"

The Sovereign appeared to smile a little.

-"I believe he's already there, commander."

-"HE?! My lord, we're getting overrun here! We can't hold out much longer! We need ammo and at least another squa-"

The commander's figure bent, as if from an explosion, and the image vanished. Kronos turned to Damien Roth.

-"The last field test, I suppose. I want to see how they fare with large amounts of enemies."

-"My lord," whispered Damien. His voice was audibly bitter. "That commander was right. No matter how powerful the Stalker might be, he is not made to take on armies."

-"Well... We'll just have to see what he does in an unknown situation then, won't we?"

--- --- ---

//by the way, this is just a small group, separate of the main reinforcement squad. Those guys are busy guarding Vandrin and the rest of the premises.\

The lizardmen were relentlessly pushing on forward. The defense squadron at the gate had lost at least half of their men, but they continued to fight. The speargunners whose quivers were now empty charged at the lizards, getting killed rather quickly, due to their ridiculously small wristblades compared to the lizardmen's swords. After finding their backpacks to be empty of ammo, Vanguards too ran into the frontline. Surprisingly, they were more successful than speargunners. Even unarmed, their brute strength surpassed that of lizardmen. However, they were substantially fewer, and soon most of them were gone, too.

And then, he arrived. At first, the Kandarinians saw some sort of a disorganization in the lizardman ranks. Then they saw what appeared to literally be a pathway being cut through the lizard army. At its frontline, they saw a wildly spinning whirlwind of flashing blades, half-masked by the chameleon cloak. When the flailing mass approached the walls to a distance of about ten meters, it stopped just long enough for the Kandarinians to see what it was. It was one sole man in a full-body cloak and two small scythe-like weapons...

Moments later, the Stalker performed his familiar move. He stuck his kamas into a burly lizard's shoulders, and threw himself up onto the wall, landing perfectly on his feet. His cloak was soaked with blood and the occasional chunk of misformed flesh. Baffled by their near-invisible enemy, the lizards backed away from the walls, giving the Kandarinian task force some space to breathe. The commander approached the Stalker.

-"Guh," he coughed. "Thanks. Are you the reinforcements... er, reinforcement?"

-"Yes."

-"I see...How did you get here? What exactly did you do?"

-"Wyvern. Kill their lieutenant."

The commander gasped.

-"What? A lizardman lieutenant?!"

Every single soldier, be it Vanguard, speargunner or bladesman, always failed in a battle against a lizardman lieutenant. These have been known to take ten people on at a time... and win.

-"Yes. Seventy-six lizards dead."

-"You counted...?"

-"Yes."

The tired Kandarinian sighed.

-"Well, at least they'll back off for now, without their commanding unit..."

-"No. They'll send another one."

-"That will take some time, though."

The Stalker leaned to the wall, bending over it slightly.

-"Cut the head off the snake, and the body flails around, all crazed-like. Watch."

The lizards, managing not to break ranks, charged at the castle. Fortunately for the defenders, another squad just fended off their share of lizardmen, and came to help.

-"Well, now we can hold our own ground... Hey, I didn't catch your name, by the way --"

The Stalker was already gone.

Indher did not move. She didn't even fully turn towards the dark emperor, but rather only turned her head, keeping her eyes focused on the bright red inside his helmet.

So... This is Retan... The dark emperor...

She remained in her position, moreso not knowing how to react than fear.

Indeed, just being in his presence, I can feel his power... But... Is it really enough to put down a god of death...?

A sparkle of doubt became visible as she kept staring at the dark emperor, waiting for him to ask her something...

//Chernobyl virus? Your computer has a nuclear reactor?  Razz Anyway, that sucks. Your HDD is completely gone, or were you able to salvage anything at all?\

The impending confrontation drew ever closer. Confronted by the Kandarinian Sovereignty on one side, and the Shroud on the other, Alex felt like he had it all to lose…

Sitting on one of the benches under a gaslight, Alex pondered his next move. While he wanted to remain here until morning, he felt Carmine and whatever force he had at his disposal would reach him long before. Now that Alex had a new Twili weapon to use, hopefully he could fight both Carmine and the Shroud with it…

It was a moonless night, allowing the stars to prevail, but even the thousands upon thousands of stars in the sky could not drape the land in the ghostly blue aura a full moon could. All the better for the Shroud. Morning was still countless hours away, and waiting for it seemed like an eternity and a half.

Alex could admit to himself, but no one else, that he was scared out of his skull. He tried to allay his fears by saying he had fought hundreds of Kandies before, but never something like the Shroud. But then again, he had only heard what everyone had told him to avoid…by suppressing the Shroud, it would become far more zealous to gain control. If Alex could bait the Shroud little by little, maybe he could beat it, and ultimately, master it. It didn’t come without risk though. Give too much and the Shroud could take it all from him.

You are troubled…you fear my mastery of your body? Perhaps your fears are mistaken…you would not have accepted me unless you wanted something to gain, correct? Perhaps you have more to gain than you believe… The last Bearer was of a dark faith…he was not pure…he was an easy vessel to corrupt…he was selfish. My observations tell me you are his polar opposite…perhaps some good can come of this. If you can prove yourself a capable host, I will be at your mercy without objection. Fail however, and pay the price. This is your test. Are you afraid of the dark?

Alex couldn’t help but consider what it was saying, despite his feelings of it telling him what he wanted to hear. Would it lie to protect itself?

Do you not trust me? You forge alliances on trust, and enemies on paranoia. Fear me, and I will betray you. Accept me, and I shall be your greatest ally. Everyone must overcome their fears sooner or later…your time is now.

Why did it sound so sincere coming from such a sinister entity?

Fear leads to corruption. Corruption leads to defeat. Defeat leads to suffering. Do you want to suffer? No one wants to suffer. Then why do you resist this gift? This power can be either a curse or a blessing, it is what you want it to be. The last Bearer wanted it to be a curse, and so it became. You are a clean slate, however. If you wish for it to be a gift, so shall it be. For it to be a gift, you cannot suppress it. Suppressing leads to cursing, and cursing leads to fear. Fear leads to corruption, corruption to defeat, and defeat to suffering. It is what you want it to be. What do you want it to be?

He could only whisper, “a gift…”

You are of pure faith and heart. You are the true Bearer of the Shroud. I am at your control, your mercy. I am your sword to wield. Overcoming a fear is the greatest trial of man, and the sole reason to live. You have overcome your fear. You have passed my test.

Just like that, a demonic tentacle, willed by Alex, impaled the gaslight above, draping him in darkness. The Shroud emerged, snapped at the air, hungry for vengeance fueled by Alex’s burning passion. He was in control. He had succeeded where the last Bearer had failed. He had turned the Shroud from a curse into a weapon. As soon as it had emerged, Alex thrust it back, the Shroud willingly obeying his commands. As the it slunk back, he smirked. Carmine was in for it now.

“Alex?” Midna asked him, who had just return from elsewhere, “Are you okay now? Why are you smiling?”

“I did it,” Alex replied, his voice quavering. “It submitted to me. It wants me to control it.”

“I can’t believe it,” Midna said, shocked. “No one’s succeeded in that venture before. Now that it’s yours to command, there’s no telling what could be done with it. You know, Alex, maybe you gave it its own test, too. It wanted you to overcome your fear of it, but you forced it to overcome its fear of your control over it first. Since the overcoming was mutual, peace has been reached. It’s at your command now. Use it as a weapon.”

“I intend to,” Alex replied. “But what about the Aura of the Juggernaut?”

“It was only intended as a last resort,” Midna replied. “The Shroud feeds on the darkness, and won’t be able to help you in bright light. Incidentally, Twili magic is partially fueled by light, partially by darkness. It could save your life.”

“You might wanna relay this to the elders,” Alex replied, “and tell them they were right to have never given up on me. I owe them a thanks.”

“Will do,” Midna replied, readying another portal. “Will you stay here?”

“I’ve gotta be ready for whatever tricks Carmine has,” Alex said. “I’m sure they’ll understand.”

“I do, anyway,” Midna replied, disappearing through the portal.

Once again alone, Alex opened his mind to what the Shroud had to say.

Only a matter of time before those who have wronged you are shown justice…you are the judge, Alex, and it is time to hear the appeals.

Carmine sniffed the air. It was growing more humid. Asgarnia couldn’t be too far now. As he walked, Adam Estacado walked by his side.

Vanguards were a soldier to admire, at least in Carmine’s eyes. It took a special kind of strength to be as effective as they were expected to be. The equipment, designed specifically for Vanguard use, was incomprehensively heavy. He figured the mortar and armor combined weighed over a hundred kilos. Even though Vanguards had no speargun or wrist blades as backup weapons, brute force was often a Vanguard’s greatest weapon. Otherwise rendered useless to a speargunner, a Vanguard could use the mortar cannon as a bone-shattering bludgeon once drained of power. They were not to be taken lightly. Most Vanguards however, lacked tactical intelligence that other, specially trained soldiers had. Estacado was a different case however, he was as bright as an Asgarnian gaslight, often targeting key parts of a large target to destroy first, so as to make the fight easier for his allies. Carmine liked him, and believed him to be a valuable asset.

Finally, Asgarnia could be seen as dim splotches of light on the horizon, far down the forested path. The spire however, made an excellent landmark. They couldn’t have been further than ten miles from the city now. Finally, Carmine would have the chance to give Alex what he deserved.

But Alex knew what Carmine deserved.

A squad of five Lizard men were hunting around for some mutants and humans, when the came across Vandrin and the KAF Troops.

Vandrin grinned. "How convenient."

The spear gunners aimed their weapons.

"Try not kill them." Vandrin commanded.

"We'll do what we can." One of the spear gunners said, with some reluctance.

Vandrin's hands were then surrounded in a cyan fog which then began to surround his swords, the count then dashed towards the lizard men.

"Hey! Over here, cretins!" Vandrin shouted to get their attention; the lizard men dashed towards the count, and were then hailed by a barrage of spears, stabbing in their limbs and legs. However that wasn't nearly enough to take them down, except the count swung his blades shooting a misty cyan projectile at one of the lizard men. The projectile was a dead on hit, as the mist settled the lizard man was knocked out cold. The cyan mists around Vandrin’s weapons were gone and the other four lizard men surrounded the count.

"You ready to die, human!?" One of the lizards hissed.

"Help me you fools! You want to get paid don't you!?" Vandrin shouted.

Eight of the bladesmen nodded at each other and dashed towards the lizard men jumping up on them and stabbing them. A few bladesmen were thrown off and stabbed before they could finish their kill however, the lizard men were so strong only two of them were killed and only three bladesmen survived after the heat of the action was done. The two remaining lizard men and the living bladesmens and the count sized at each other and circled. Vandrin spun his katanas.

"Come on you scaled freaks." Vandrin taunted, he stepped towards them. One of the lizard men chose to engaged the old man, and smashed down his huge broadsword, the agile count however rolled out of the way and tossed his katana right into the lizard's right arm joint. The lizard squealed in pain. Vandrin dashed towards the injured monster and jumped into the air reading to jab his sword into his neck, yet with his good arm the lizard man smacked the count back to the ground.

"Why you..." Vandrin growled as he got back up, the other lizard men went to attack him, but the injured one lifted up his hand motioning him to stop.

"He'ss mine!" He hissed with his lizard voice. The lizard man removed the katana from his arm, grimaceing as he plucked it out, he tossed the weapon on the ground. He then held his sword with his left hand. "Time to die!" He hissed he then dashed towards the count ready to slam his sword down on him, yet the count slid towards him, rather then roll away until he was right underneath him, he then jabbed his sword right into the creature's belly. The lizard man gargled and fell over to his right as the count got back up. The other lizard man was shocked as were the bladesmen.

"This old guy's good..."

//I'll update the others later.\

// I'm waiting for you to reply to what he said, DM! FTW!

Aaron and his party ventured deep into the forest. They finally came upon a larger path made of quality stone, most of which none have ever seen before. Up ahead of the path were great wooden gates, surrounded by a marble building and silver walls with crystal walls.

"Well, here we are! Vol Duria... I need to see an old friend of mine before we retake the Palace. Come on in, I'll show you around." The great city within the forest held a sense of magic beyond any other. One who had no magical power could even feel a sense of a magical charge in the air. There were Drannivolkan knights weilding and practicing with Dai-katanas, along with the native elves.

"Aaron? By the gods, it is you! How've you been all these years, you old sod?" A abnormally large elf came out of the marble building behind them and greated Aaron.

"Anaxese! I'm surprised to see you still drawing breath!"

"The Dark Empire's hounds keep trying my friend. Who'd you upset to get sent so far from home?"

"Well, some one had to help all of us put an end to this... Anyways, I'd like you to meet the newly founded Arios Royal Guard. My good friends, these people behind me, are from all the way up north, to Tjed! Justin and Jason hail from the arctic continent even!"

"By Dran, such a far away place... Well, how's about you come on down and take a look at the elven army I've been training! We've even been the host of the Drannivillian Elite! They've made quite an improvement to my army."

"So that's what's going on with all of the Drannivolkans training those elves... I'll assume they've come to help drive out the Dark Empire?"

"Yup. I hope with our combined strength, we'll be able to defeat the Dark Empire's army here, and drive them back. I've gathered 10,000 elves from the neighboring forest villages and cities. They've all come to the great city to gather up for an attack. I've also counted heads of the Drannivillian Elite, which is 5,000 more good soldiers, men and women alike! They've all come to fight for they're empire, and now that you're here, their morale will be ten times stronger!"

"That's the best news I've heard since I got here. Job well done Anaxese... I'd like you to meet my own elites! Justinian Constantine, Jason Tiberius, Doriana, Dranniconias, Thomas Jacobie, Elroy, Ven, and uhh... another lad we picked up. He's an alchemist, though, and a good one at that."

"Alchemist? Never thought alchemy was real. Alright then, make yourselves at home! There's a great manor up the road that you can all stay in for now. I fixed it up a few days ago, looking to sell it soon. But now that you guys are here, you need it more. Enjoy your stay in Vol Duria!"

//I could have sworn that I already replied to that. Sorry.\

"Interesting." Duilin replied. "So are all the gods involved in this? Like the ruling dark god of hell, Iban and the ones from Mount Olympus? I actually had an angel friend from Olympus."

He paced back and forth for a bit. "Anyways, we need to find these fake angels and take them down. If they're looking for you, then it would be best to perhaps both stay here and maybe find some secluded area, so no innocents get harmed. Perhaps we could wait for them to come and get you, in the castle court yard."

Lagart and Rink came back, Lagart was actually carrying both The Iduran and the Talonscar Mace, and he handed both of the weapons to Duilin. The Iduran was still in its sheath and belt so he simply strapped it around his waist; he then held the mace by the handle and right under the blades.

"So, what's the plan?" Rink asked.

"I'm suggesting we go to the castle courtyard and wait for these false angels to try and attack Ben, again. Then we take them head on." Duilin then looked at Ben. "You think that will work?"

--- ---

//Blast it! I have too many characters!\

Ophelia nodded. "Yes, however I do have my friend Rufokanno here." She said. "He is skilled in telekinesis, and can block out people from sensing his aura. However he has told me, his aura block doesn't work all of the time."

Rufokanno shrugged.

"Luckily, Rufokanno isn't officially part of the Dark Empire." Ophelia added. "Therefore neither of us would be in any danger, if he was caught."

"What about Rufokanno?" You-know-who asked.

"You would likely be killed on the spot." Ophelia replied.
The elf replied with a frown.

She continued to talk to Melface "And there is also the matter of Rufo sneaking into Tjedon, and even getting in. Not very many people can get in. I suppose he could fly over the mountains, but then he would easily get spotted out by the Velkens. However...I may actually be able to cast an invisibly spell on him. My old master taught me, but I've never tried it before. Yet even if I did try that, would he even be to get Duilin out."

"Now before we try anything I want you to know one thing first. I want to talk to Duilin, before we kill him." She said sternly. "There is something I need to know from him."

//for more information about what exactly is the "unlife" and the two scribes, look up unlife on DALpedia.\

"The council was once again assembled.

-"I think that Stalkers will be an excellent addition to the Kandarinian Armed Forces. They could be used for stealth missions quite perfectly," I said. "The new twist that you added, Damien, at the end of the Stalker training program will help us weed out the unsuccessful attempts. I think that even though the success rate is less than two percent, the end product justifies the means."

Cain Ryleh, the Scribe of Unlife, objected:

-"The costs are enormous, my lord. Stalkers won't make us money - just enemies. Besides, they cannot down a large creature, which would be good for precious unlife. In fact, they can't kill significantly large amounts of enemies either, as they work alone. They are a resource drain with no up-side."

-"What about countries?", parried Damien. "I mean, we can use Stalkers to eliminate targets of importance and weakness. As even you yourself know, Cain, if you strike something in the weak spots long enough, it will collapse. Our target will be ripe for the taking. That's where we'll get your money and your resources from. As for unlife... We can just perform a mass sacrifice of the still-alive inhabitants, can we not?"

-"And besides," the Scribe of Undeath cut in. "A war will have losses on both sides. My lord's power can easily turn those losses into gains."

That's the kind of comment that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

-"Now, now, Eve, calm down. I didn't appoint you to be the Scribe of Undeath to be sucking up to me. It is a known fact that I make life where there is death, and you don't need to point that out. I think that no matter how you look at it, we can all agree that the benefits from Stalkers greatly outweigh the resources spent on making them."

There was a quiet murmur of "yes, Sovereign."

-"Therefore, I announce the Kandarinian Armed Forces Academy's Stalker training program officially open. Now, next item." I scanned the scroll I was holding in my hands. "Ah, yes. The KAF itself. We are in a dire need of raw recruits. Our current population of eight thousand people is barely, if at all, cutting it. We must find a source of fresh meat for the Academy."

Of course, when it came to KAF matters, Damien got the first voice.

-"My lord, we can try another attempt at taking over Gaian. We can start out small, recapturing random villages and settlements. I mean, so what if it takes us 20 or more posts to do? The benefits are endless. Once we've gathered a sufficiently large mass of slaves, we can start training them to fight for us. Of course, there's also the matter of large cities... When our army is vast, we will rule the old capitals of the world. Resources will no longer be a problem. I vote for."

-"I can see income and real estate. I vote for," announced Cain.

-"I can see potential for minions, as well as more people for our cause, I vote for," said Eve.

-"And I can see my advisers ganging up on me. I don't see how I have much of a choice... So be it. Let this be known as Operation Dawnbreak. We will build and hone our army, and Gaian will be ours again. This council is now dismissed."

--- ---

-"The Scribe herself couldn't come up, because she's in a council right now. Her assistant did, however gave me this soulstone. No one knows whose soul is in it, so it was free for the taking. Here you go."

Andre took the little purplish-black gem, and looked at it through his glasses. He could see a dark mass swirling inside.

-"In-te-re-sting... I'll take it," he said. "We'll have to send her our thanks sometime."

Jorge returned to his position.

-"Anyways," he began. "Did you make any progress?"

Andre scratched his head.

-"Well, not much. You see how it's barely moving now?" - Jorge nodded. - "That's because we took out the power source. It kept overturning my table, I think just out of spite. I told you, no intelligence. Even then, though, the flesh still appears to ripple every now and then. I suppose it stores energy."

-"Alright. So now, do we just... kinda shove the soulstone somewhere in there?"

-"I actually think that will do it. The soulstone matter should react with the flesh, and, specifically, the brain, and release its contents inside. The soul will find its way to the brain itself."

-"Well, in it goes... then we can ask it who it is!"

-"Good idea."

The scientists opened the cranial case of the barely-moving machine, and carefully inserted the soulstone in between the two hemispheres of the brain. The little gem appeared to glow a deep purple. Quickly, as to not damage the fragile organ, the scientists closed the cranial case and sealed it to prevent further attempts to open it. Slowly, they placed the power source back into the belly of the beast, so to speak. The hatch to the machine's innards closed by itself, as the orb powered up from the flesh surrounding it. The dark red eyes slowly lit up.

-"Beware...", came a deep, raspy voice from inside the machine. "I live..."

-"Uh, sir, who would you be?"

The machine's head slowly turned with a grinding noise.

-"I am... Skorn..."

//hint: look up "skorn" Wink \

Quadricentennial stood up. He looked at his massive arms filled with muscle that were not there before. "How did this happen?" His muscles were very large and strong. He was trying to make sense of it all but could not figure how this happened. Suddenly he felt his muscles twitching. They then started to shrink, from the arms to to the legs, his chest, neck and torso. His body soon went back to his old self. Once more he was confused at what happened. "What is going on?".

The trees were now lying on the ground, all smoldering and decaying. The black ash spilled the ground. Nothing had survived. It was all pitch black. Quadricentennial did not know whoat to make of this. It looked like his life was starting to take a new turn. He looked up in the sky. His owls managed to escape the inferno and returned to him. "I guess we have no choice but go somewhere else." He got off the now black plain and headed for somewhere else. He then spotted the green sword that was on the floor. His helmets that he collected are now melted and gone. He had nothing for his collection so he decided to take the green sword. He picked it up but it was not heavy as it was before. Another strange occurance. He put it on his back and headed down a road.,
