Here is a sample from the an old English bible (A.D. 400 to 1100), the opening lines of genesis.
"Us is riht micel ðæt we rodera weard, wereda wuldorcining, wordum herigen, modum lufien! He is mægna sped, heafod ealra heahgesceafta, frea ælmihtig."
Luckily the Normans (French) came along in 1066, conquered England and help sculpt the language - since it's current form was heavily influenced by all the Viking occupation over the centuries.
I don't know much about the history of the language...but I watched what turned out to be a suprisingly interesting documentary on it once.
