Well, one thing I've been trying to accomplish is finding a way to create a site both visually pleasing and fast running.  However, since "visually pleasing" tends to end up requiring a monstrous number of images, I'm looking for a way to pre-load all the images needed on the website in a sort of loading screen (think of those movie websites like X3 that pre-load their flash stuff or whatever so it runs faster later on).

If anyone knows of a way to do something like this (any language is fine), I would be interested in learning how.

hey... I don't know crap about that kind of stuff but I know that a few sites like "you're the man now dog" at http://www.ytmnd.com/ you can try to contact them and ask how they preload thier movie clips (actually I am not sure if that's what it is doing....)

Just a little tip, Dooms.  Check the date of the last post on some of these topics lower on the list.  This one's almost a year old.  (Heh...)

Personally I don't have any problem with reviving older topics so long as you add relevant input.  Probably something you want to know you're doing beforehand, though.  (Heh...)

That having been said, I do have relevant input myself.

Do not try to make a graphically intensive site.  Web design today must be focused on swift functionality.  You will lose visitors to your site if it does not complete loading within 20 seconds.  Preloading all the images for the site makes this worse.

On the other side, preloading is only viable for dial-up users, or broadband users with many concurrent downloads.

You want to keep visitors on your site, keep it clean and simple.  Look at my site, http://www.mjhnosekai.com/ , there are but a few images.  The background image, the "scanline" effect, is only 2 pixels in size.  Not even a few bytes.  The banner is larger, but my site doesn't hinge on its visibility.  Little XHTML 1.1 Valid, and CSS 2 Valid icons on the lower right are small, but again, not majorly important.  Images I use for my articles, again, not entirely important, just focus to add an effect.  One can browse my site with images off, and it'll still be rendered pretty effectively.

\"People who sin say this: That they had to, to survive. People who sin say this: That it\'s too late to stop. The shadow called Sin dogs them steadily without saying a word. Remorse and Agony are repeated, to finally end up at Despair. But sinners don\'t know that if they turn around, there is a light.... a light which keeps shining on them ever so warmly.\" - Vash the Stampede - Trigun

\"There\'s a heaven on earth that so few ever find, though the map\'s in your soul and the road\'s in your mind. So many mountains before us, so many rivers to cross, where is the wisdom to bring back the vision we\'ve lost? Can we gaze with the wonder of children into the deafening night? Has it gotten so dark that you cannot remember the light?\" - D. Fogelburg
