Just wandering, are there people here who like roguelike games?

For those who don't know, they are games created in similar style as "rogue", an ancient RPG-like game where instead of graphics ascii-like symbols represented monsters and dungeon.

Roguelikes are very, VERY complex games, which use symbolical or none graphics.

I know Number Eight has a link for download of nethack's graphical version on site  Very Happy

Best roguelike games (in my opinion)...

Nethack

Pros: Details. You can wear bags on heads, throw eggs and cream pies at enemies, description of things and environment changes when your blind or hallucinating. Humor!

Cons: Without solution, you'll never beat it (too hard to deduce some things). Many factors are random determining if you'll be able to beat the game or not (or you have to spend 5 hours praying for a monster which can drop an item or provide a corpse which when eaten, will give you a way to pass through the water).

ADOM

Pros: Good graphics made from ASCII symbols. Nice storyline.

Cons: Losing strength during fighting many monsters to level at which you miss 99% attacks makes game suck for physical-oriented characters. Spellbooks dissappearing and limited spells make game suck for magic-oriented characters.

UnReal World

Pros: Excellent environment set in early middle-ages Finland.

Cons: Hard. Unintuitive and there are so many things you have to care about that you can get confused  Laughing

I haven't but I have played a game called Wasteland (not the one made with TK) and it was the worst RPG ever! It had almost text based battles! PC Sounds! Horible things!

Fallout is the best RPG ever! Fallout 2 is better, but I think the ending isn't as good however. The Master is alot cooler looking then Frank Horgan!

Both fallouts rock, altrough I didn't play F1  <_<

But I've read Fallout Bible and generally know most facts about F1 from various sites.

These games are simply breathtaking. The storyline is amazing. The choice you can made is excellent. The game characters are what they are supposed to be.

The dialogues are excellent and they developers really got their point - I never heard of man who would truly like guys like Myron or Lynette in F2.

Aaaah, and the deathclaws. Gorris (F2) is the best character ever made! The good old times as I attacked some villager in Vault CIty, Gorris screamed "I'd rather give than recieve!" and ran around murdering a few people in one round (he got incredible amounts of action points).

And the freedom of your action. After some time of playing, I found myself running around towns in bridgekeeper's robe, dropping dynamite and killing with sledge hammer.

(I considered myself doing crusade to cleanse New Reno, Vault City and Den from the scum)

The texts of some characters are flawless...

"My garden is well... how is yours?" - Hakunin
"We all have gardens." - Hakunin
"May it be of no use." - Hakukin (about healing powder)
"...I want to avenge my tribe." - Gorris
"The grass is greener across the fence... but you must first find that fence." - forgot the name, the funny tribal you got from Den, talking about the spirits

Aaaah, and playing character with 1 point of intelligence was best ever fun. ("find the GECK! GECK! understood?")

Fallout: Tactics sux, for comparision.

As for games like Fallout / Soul Reaver, that I am fan of, I know almost everything including the "apocrypha" - deleted material.

Like fact that there was a guy intended who rivalved with you to become the Chosen One and failed, so he turned evil. His name would be Kaga. There are dialogues for him coded, but he's not in game.

There were also deleted materials, accessible through a special patch (which I never downloaded, but heard of it) - The Abbey, the cave with Holy Hand Grenade (most powerful throwing weapon) and some other unfinished vault.

Also, it's pariah dog, not pirra, heh. Pariahs are the lowest caste of people in hunduism castes, the "unclean".

Best guys ever in F2 were the hubologists. They wanted to see their god so they were building a space shuttle to go to him  Laughing Actually, they beliefs made some sense. Except when I joined them, the "good" karate master (Dragon, I guess) in San Francisco hated me.  <_<  ("go away, sheep of the hub")

Also, karate tournament in San Francisco is best way to get experience (8000 exp for finishing both trainings, for Lo Pan and for Dragon), and you simply can take psycho + buffout combo before it, lol.

Best random encounter? The bridge keeper. Smile

Richard Grey. You find that out in The Military Base after you swipe it from The Lutenet's dead corps after you kill him. Or is that The Lutenut's real name? Oh wait I beilve that The Lutenut was another friend of Harold's but I forget the name exactly. Okay I got a question for you! What 2 movies are Fallout based on?

Good. Too bad you don't win a cookie because I have none.

Movies?

- Mad Max
- Nuclear Dawn (or something)

Or maybe on that movie where some postman delivered mail in post-apocalyptic world. Forgot the name. Ofr maybe THAT was "nuclear dawn" or something. Whoa.

Hmmm....those aren't the two I was thinking of but I guess those are good. I guess it's based on alot of movies but I think it's mostly these two...

The Road Warrior
Terminator

The super computer in the brotherhood base in san fran tells you that it may have been robots that started the war. In Terminator it was robots that started the war!

Hmm, Road Warrior - yeah. But Mad Max too, definately. Fallouts has even a special jacket from Mad Max movies, when you wear it Dogmeat comes to you (or when you give him iguana-on-the-stick or smth), a reference to movie.

Also, Mad Max was post-apocalyptic.

As for Terminator, it might be simple allusion. Fallout is not based on terminator.

There are references to almost any movie, Mortal Kombat, Silence of the Lambs...

The truth about fallout is that it was intended as game happening about year 2050, but with mentality of people in 50's. For example, in 50's people thought there is no nuclear winter, but a desolate wasteland filled with mutants. And PipBoy is based off american cartoon "duck and cover" teaching what to do in case USSR attacks with nuclear weapons (lol).
